It's a program that I found on my computer and can't get rid of it. (It doesn't seem to do anything that I can tell). Webroot doesn't detect it as spyware and CA doesn't detect it as a virus. When I try to delete it; says "write protected or something similiar.
Any ideas. Google seems unclear about it.

Never heard of the program asksbar. There is an ask toolbar on FireFox, do you use FireFox?

There is a great free program found here that will solve the access denied message problems. Never had a problem with it, just read the instructions through. It is free, but if it helps you consider donating.

google it

But it appears from my end that it's related to the AskJeeves search engine.

Here is one possible explanation:

If you go to other pages suggested by a Google search, don't waste your time with anything that offers a "free scan" etc

Those do run a "free check" which mainly returns your saved Cookies and in any event the "fix" which follows is only available if you buy some kind of removal product.

You used the term "delete" in your original post.

Perhaps you meant "Remove"...but if not, go to Control Panel>Add & Remove Programs and remove AskSBar

You will need to have your browser CLOSED while doing this or else you might trigger the "Cannot delete, program is in use" message

If it is installed in C/Program files it is just the Ask.com toolbar which is a POS but not really harmful.
If it is installed under C/Windows or C/Windows/System32 it is a trojan/virus type thing that goes by the same name and should be removed promptly

# Is asksbar.dll spyware?
No.

# Is this considered adware or popup related?
Yes. This is advertising related, so it is considered adware and may be causing popup windows on your computer.

# Is this considered a virus or trojan?
No.

# Would you recommend that I remove asksbar.dll?
Yes, I would remove asksbar.dll if it was on my computer. If you wish to do this, and you get an error message because you cannot access it, you should first terminate the task in your tasklist and then attempt to add it to your recycle bin again.

Buster is all over this baby.

Not that it's a big deal, but if you go into task manager & end the task, you should then be able to delete it.

You have No idea what I have been going through with my Laptop the past 3 days !!

Virus and Trojans...I have scan uploaded, downloaded a couple of things to try to Block all this.

After Almost having it under control, I had to use Microsoft Onecare
and Windows Defender to stop it all.

TT--how do I go into task manager?
Thanks.

I have seen a task manager at some time, but I don't recall to bring it up.

Right click on an open space on your lower "taskbar" (at bottom of most screens and shows tabs for open windows and programs.

OR

Hit CTRL/ALT/DELETE just ONE time

Two times will usually cause the entire system to reboot

opened the task manager, but the program isn't listed there, so I didn't know what to close. Something tells me this is associated with Webroot's Spysweeper. They recently updated their program.

Go to Set programs Access and Defaults
Then go to Change and Remove Programs

There, you should find the program. You will be able to remove it.
