Strahan Could Return or Umenyiora Could Be Back By October or Neither Could Happen

In the wake of the news that Giants' stud defensive end Osi Umenyiora requires season-ending surgery, rumors of a possible Michael Strahan return have started circulating. This was bound to happen and is bound to hold us all hostage for the near future on a not-quite-Favre-level of obnoxiousness, but annoying nonetheless. And what would it take for this hero to give up his Fox gig and return to the Giants? Oh, he’ll do it for the low, low price of just $8 million:

Defensive end Michael Strahan would come out of retirement for $8 million and some kind words, a source close to Strahan told the New York Daily News.

"If the Giants make a sincere overture, it's a good chance that Strahan would consider coming back," the source told the newspaper. "There are other things he has to take into consideration: the money and his contract with Fox. But if the Giants really want him, they have a shot. It's not out of the question."

Ah, yes, the always reliable “source close to [inset player’s name here.]” If the anonymous man in the shadows says the deal is a possibility, well then damn, I’d say this thing is practically a lock to happen. Of course, there is this pesky issue: The team previously maxed out at a $6.5 million, one-year deal for Strahan last Spring.

Further complicating things is an article in Newsday this morning (via PFT), quoting a “noted surgeon” saying Umenyiora could be back in October. The article explains how this might be possible in great, complicated length, but basically it involves Umenyiora having the damaged meniscus removed, instead of repaired.

So, to review: We have a nameless character saying Strahan could come back, we have a PGA Tour surgeon claiming Osi could come back in October and we have every fan, player and coach on earth begging to get rid of some of these preseason games. I’ll let Clinton Portis, circa 2006, explain, after the jump.

OTK what type of odds are you talking on the Giants? SHOCKED is pretty strong, 4-1?

They're about 4-1 to win their division, so no way would I give 4-1 odds on them to make the playoffs when there's two wildcard spots and the NFC sucks. They are favored to make the playoffs, so I probably wouldn't give the defending champs plus odds to just make the post-season. I would give even odds though, which I think is pretty fair.

Even odds is beyond fair in that conference. I think they make the playoffs but wouldnt be surprised if they didnt.

I definitely concur with you OTK that they are a dog actually. That division is loaded and those teams are gonna beatup on one another. Not to mention they got the huge target on their back of being SB champs and now their top 2 pass rushers are out when that was undeniably the strength of their team.

I see NYG going 8-8, 9-7ish and probably would make them a slight dog to make the playoffs. I was just surprised you said you would be SHOCKED.....

They are done. Losing Strahan was bad enough, now with Usi gone Tuck is going to be double teamed like crazy and the Giants won't have a pass rush which is what won them many games last year. This injury is HUGE.

I had them finishing last in the East before this injury, and this definitely helps that out. They lost way too much from that defense, and although the offense is solid, it's nothing spectacular that will win you games.

Giants still have a favorable schedule and could finish 8-8/9-7.
Good chance they can get the 8-8!
