Today's stage was won by the best sprinter in the world Mark Cavendish in a outstanding performance to nip the Green Jersey holder Thor Hushovd. The leaders at the top pretty much stayed where they were in preperation for tomorrow deciding climb up Mont Ventoux. It will be tough day as this is a very tough stage and the standings are very close for the 3 rd. podium position held by Lance. Can He hold on ? good question with the Schleck brothers aiming to attack I'm sure. If the 3 Astana riders Contador, Kloden and Lance work together, it's possible.
I am leaving on vacation so I will leave the recap up to some of you other knowledgable posters. I enjoy the Tour De France and have enjoyed sharing my thoughts with some of you also.
GL :103631605:toast:~~:<< PS I'm off to Oregon to take in some of the world's finest scenery.

This thread will slow with Kermit's absence. I thought stage 20 was slightly anticlimatic and did not live up to the hype. Total respect is due to all riders who climbed that freaker, but the stage ended up being a team/sponser 'stand pat' in this hand of corporate biker-poker. It was lots of camera focus show on Andy Schleck's inconsequential twenty-eight pedal-turn breakaways followed by the heroic look back to brother Frank. Meanwhile, the mean kitty cat in the bunch- Contador- waited as if looking for a fatter mouse. Armstrong was terrific as were Wiggins and Kloden (Wiggings probably had a Versus feed of Phil Liggett 's homer/Brit exhortations.. take nothing from the smartest/best sports commentary in the world in Phil Liggett's tour coverage).
I know this climb was difficult and in no way insinuate that these great riders phoned anything in, but it just worked out, with Astana's strength and the strong jail-keep Contador- who played as a total team player, that the stage ended as inconsequential. On to Paris. Team Armstrong/Radio Shack 2010 being built while the champagne glasses are sipped along the way.

Contador is a big tough guy now talking all of this shit when all of the teammates are no longer together. I really hope Lance takes the Tour next year. Its unreal how Contador thinks he could of won the tour on his own without his teammates. What a piece of shit.

Versus will be broadcasting the Tour of Ireland in late August... Lance has already said he will be riding in this race.

I'm back from my Oregon vacation and I would like to express my closing thoughts on the 2009 Tour De France. First off I would like to say that this years Tour attracted a 80 % greater audience than last years. There is no question that Lance Armstrong's participation in this year's Tour was the main reason. Whether you are a fan or an opponent of his, there is no question that He is one of the greatest Cyclist of all time. We must also acknowledge that Contador was easily the best Cyclist in this years Tour and He very well might win many more Tours in the future.
Since I was out of town for stage 20 up Mont Ventoux, I would like to give my thoughts on this decisive final real racing day of 209 Tour.
Contador had over a 4 minute lead over Andy Schleck so I would say his lead was pretty much insurmountable. Therefore He did exactly what He was supposed to do for himself and also his team. He stayed in Andy Schleck's wheel the entire day. However Andy Schleck actually made a novice mistake by attacking on the final climb and dumping everyone but Contador. Why was it a mistake ? Easy answer ! Andy had 0 chance of overtaking Contador so his main job was to stay with his brother and perhaps help Frank Schleck get by Lance for podium position in 3 rd. place. However by attacking, He left his brother Frank isolated behind and stuck in the group that contained the 2 Astana teammates Kloden, Armstrong and Bradley Wiggins. Of course by now all the major leaders knew that Wiggins would be no match for Armstrong on this last grueling climb. In other words Andy Schleck did to his brother almost exactly what Contador had done to his own teammate Kloden a few days earlier. Lance really only had to stay on Frank Schleck's wheel and He had 3 rd. place on the podium clinched. Frank was all alone and Lance had Kloden to help him. At the very end Lance knew He had more left than the rest and simply peddled away to claim 3 rd. place. He even managed to get right up to Andy and Contador at the top of the climb. I will post my thoughts on what is in store for next year's Tour shortly as there will be lots of changes ! :toast::103631605

The 2010 Tour De France will no doubt see a big change in the Astana team which was so dominant in this year's Tour. The leader and Manager Johan Bruyneel is leaving to join Lance Armstrong to form Team Radio Shack. Also at this time it is up in the air who Alberto Contador will be riding for. It has been reported that He has turned down a 22 Million offer to extend his contract with Astana. There is no question that Contador will be back next year to defend his Tour victory but for what team ?
For those interested in how to make a future wager on next year's tour, why does it matter as it was obvious that He was the class of this year's Tour. Well if I had to make a wager right now I would put my $$ on Contador but since I don't have to make any wagers at this time, I will wait to see who's on what team. Let's remember that Team Astana easily won the team time trials and gained over 40 seconds or more on every other team member on opposing teams. If Contador didn't have the huge advantage of being on the Astana team, He might have lost 40 or more seconds instead of gaining 40 seconds on his chief opponent Andy Schleck. Also if Contador didn't have Levi, Kloden and Armstrong to help him in the steep Mountains, it is hard to really figure how much harder his path to Victory might have been. Also the Individual Time trial courses were kinda playing right into Contador's strong suit with lots of uphill grades that helped him build up most of his big lead. Contador really didn't show up Andy Schleck on the steep mountain stages with a lot of his advantage built up on the 3 time trials. I look for Andy to put in a lot of work to improve his time trial skills and thereby making the contest much closer. As for Lance, I think He put in a stellar performance but in the end his long layoff and his broken Collarbone injury proved to be the biggest obstacles to giving Contador any real challenge. Lance used to be the best time trial Cyclist in the Tour and his performance in the 2 ITT were not up to his standards and He lost way too much time to Contador to have any real chance. Perhaps next year with more time to get in top shape, He might be able to return to being one of the best ITT cyclist in the Tour. I believe his only chance to return to the top of the podium rests with him being able to stay close to the leaders in the ITT.
So how do I foresee next year ? Somehow I still see Contador winning next year's Tour with Andy Schleck finishing 2 nd, but far closer. Lance will be in better shape but also a year older while Alberto and Andy are still reaching their prime. Therefore I really can't foresee Lance rising above these two superb Cyclists but perhaps finishing a closer 3rd.
However We are talking about Lance Armstrong so there is always a chance that He could even stun me !

Kermit do you think Lance wins the Tour of Ireland?

I really can't make an intelligent comment as to Lance's chances in the Tour of Ireland. Where are the odds on this race even posted ? I have been very successful on wagering on the Tour De France as this long grueling race is very easy to predict. There are so many strategies in the Tour De France and most gamblers simply are unaware of what's really happening. I know that I was one of those bettors when I observed my first Tour De France. I plan on posting my thoughts on next years Tour which looks like it should be a exciting one for sure with Lance heading up Team Radio Shack and of course Contador and Andy Schleck coming back ! The actual composition of these great riders teams will help me to make a decision on how to bet the race. GL in all your wagering. BTW I hope to see you at next year's Bash. I can assure you that it will be a blast.

It would be cool if the Bash was during the tour next year. If that was the case and we were both there we could get up and watch a stage.

I watched almost every stage .. at least the part of every stage that meant anything. I sure hope that you make it to the next Bash.

Cavendish is by far the best sprinter in the world today IMHO
2/5 is not my cup, however I wouldn't waste $$ wagering against him !
