Hey fellas...

I'm contemplating switching from my crappy cable service to DirectTV. Any pros/cons I should know about?

Was looking toward a basic package? And my local cable company is offering me a subpar price, imo.

so, far...comparing basic packages...basic meaning no HD/DVR/movie channels:

$39/month for DirectTV
$59.99/month for Charter

is this a no-brainer?

I have had Directv for 8 years and have had no problems.

I had the MLB package for 2 years and well worth the money.

If you decide to go Directv, make sure you get the sports package for $10 a month. You will not be sorry.

The only reason I keep direct is the NFL ticket. I had a bad experience with them. I have dish also because I wanted hrtv as well as tvg. I think both are very good services but if you like sports I would think direct is the way to go. I hear more good about them than just my one bad experience.

I've been with them for 13-14 years and for the most part they are excellent. I've not encountered any real problems, with the service (technical) or housekeeping, (billing or programming) types.

They offer all kinds of innovative programming. The NFL package alone is deal maker. They also have unique options like seeing all the games on one screen. Or the one I use, where you get every scoring play, and that one is commercial free. Basically a guy watching all 8 games that switches from game to game showing whats important.

Trust me, the NFL package is tremendous. There are other sports options like during each golf major you can watch on one channel, all the players play one particular hole, or on another you follow one threesome (or Sunday one pair) showing every stroke.

New technology like arranging to record programs on your computer or phone. With the computer hookup you can also watch whats on your tv on your computer.

Sorry to go on and on, but its definately 1 bill I never regret paying.

I sold my house and we're currently renting. We're stuck with Cablevision right now. I really miss Directv.

Been with Direct for 10 years. The only reason I keep them is the NFL package. If it wasn't for that I would change. The main reason is to get HD they have a large dish that feeds off of 5 satellites that range across the sky instead of one fixed point. If you have trees around your house you could be screwed. I bought 2 60" plasmas and can not get HD due to the trees.

Also remember that if it rains you will lose service and have blackout periods where that will not happen with cable.

Good luck

This imo is false. Years ago I had DTV & never once did I lose service due to rain or even snow. I went through multiple blizzards & still had no issues. The only time I had issues is when the card I programmed went down & I would have to reprogram it in about 2-3 minutes.

I would like to know more about FTA though as it has been mentioned as a suggestion to me a few times. What does one need, the pros & cons, what can one actually get channel wise, etc...?

I concur. I lived in Tampa the year that all of the hurricanes rolled through Florida and only lost reception once for about 5 minutes. Their customer service has always been very accomodating. Would definitely recommend.

That sucks! Where in LI are you? I have been back out here since April.

I'm in Bellmore. I'm actually thinking about going to Verizon FIOS at some point. Cablevision has to be the worst from an equipment and channel availability standpoint. No NFL network and about 1/2 of the kids channels Directv and FIOS have. Sometimes we struggle to find something that my kids like to watch at night. We have had Cablevision less than 3 months and we are on our 3rd DVR in our bedroom already because they keep giving me crappy, refurbished equipment.

I do find that Cablevision's customer service is excellent though. Very polite and responsive. It doesn't make up for the other negatives though.

Good thing about Cablevision is that there is no contract, so I can cancel whenever I want.

and you get charged $5.00 per extra reciever and if you want to watch multiple shows you need multiple lines to accomodate. I cut back to the basic package $39.00 and the extra $12 for sports and my bill is $102 with all the extra charges.

And not losing reception varies with your surroundings (trees etc.)

He's talking about HD service and he's 100% right, if I get the slightest rain/snow the HD won't work.
