Simply put these days no one wants to talk about this because there aren't many left. My advice is to find as many locals as you can. There are plenty out there and that is where you will find the majority of your opinionated lines. Some even still operate out of the newspaper and better yet some still have huge swings in their lines. You will not find this offshore anymore and that is a reality.

avssports - One very good way to create your own opinionated lines is to use promotions like the one at Rio/Skybook. You can get a free half point on basketball (and football) sides everyday of the week. The half point will make a difference in the long run, that is for certain.

Avs, outside of the top offshores, do as suggested above, find a mix of some deep-pocketed old locals & a few post-college/young arrogant/well-funded locals that will boldly put a few personal adjusted lines in their mix.

As Wil noted of Skybook,etc..free hooks and reduced vig in the end equate to differentiated lines. It's just that they keep BMs from being exposed to the smarts by not having to hang a fattie, while still in essence offering their clients premium benefits on their selected plays.

It's an unfortunate fact for the public at large, but some of the better/bigger opinionated shops out there, don't advertise in the phone book, and are stateside, thus discreet and by recommendation only, until some get busted or go offshore..or both!

Besides, these places have the Don Best screen-beepers(those whom's limit plays or smaller plays/opinion can move number) all coming in, and some are moved prior to the screen joints..tough outs.

Having a feel for many of the teams you like early(Sun-Mon for Football), or overnights in MLB & Hoops, will assure you the better of the number quite often, with only minimal early-capper & runner number-buy adjustments in many cases. Also some syndicates don't step in until Tuesday & Wednesday to start firmed-up football moving...this of course, all contingent on you having an opinion before others help shape it.

Scorpion, if you play big enough, win enough, or get networked, there are usually plenty in any major metro..hell, there are cities of a few hundred K that have plenty.

Most are found by achievement, not by asking around.

I'm not a west-coaster, wish I could help, but many guys on this board are.

You must be a young snapper, have you only been betting since the age of offshore?

Ivan, you're in Vancouver, a large and wealthy North Amercian city, there has to be some local stores of size?

Where does Ben Burns(Vancouver Hockey Guru) get down?..all farmed outta country?

Are you guys telling me that outside of Vegas, that west of the Mississippi River, it's hard to find decent locals?

In that case I'd say move to NYC, Bost, Balt, Chi, Det, St.L, KC, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Miami, Philly..

Go to any sports bar in any city. Look at the guys who obviously have action. Introduce yourself and ask who they play with. If they look ok, ask for a referral.

Fezzik's right, go to the best sports bars in your city, ask large bettors or the bar's owner whom to be introduced to(be it players, BMs, office clerks,etc..).

Also, if you play cards for real cash, you will be able to find premium BMs in your area in no time.

Ivan, are you a pucks capper?

Be able to help me come NHL Playoffs?..which has become my favorite post-season sport to watch besides Football of course.

I'm not a card player, but many good poker players are also astute sports bettors or books, and often if not, then still chums with those that can advise them for pocket.

Also, if you golf well or bet hard on the links, you may well find a connection.

I know from your posts here, you are a solid capper.

I live in Los Angeles and I don't have a local. After losing big offshore on credit I decided to play post-up only but I may consider trying a local at some point. My feeling is that even with soft lines, it is tougher to win on credit because it makes it so much easier to go on tilt.

What Fezzik wrote is definitely true, but I would add golf courses to that list. A lot of golfers gamble and if you get out a few times as a single you may be able to strike up a conversation and find a guy who either books or knows a willing bookie.

For whatever reason just about everyone I've met in L.A. who plays with a local is from the Valley. There are a lot of parlay card bettors from the airport suburbs and the San Gabriel Valley, but as far as big bettors who play with traditional locals, just about all of them are Asian dudes who live in the San Fernando Valley.
