Opening a bank account in Costa Rica

I am currently in Costa Rica and plan on staying here for a few months. I play poker and want to open a bank account here so that I can play on the non US friendly sites and bonus whore the sports books like the good ole days pre UIGEA.

I have read vastly different accounts on the ease of a non resident opening a bank account in Costa Rica. I was hoping that someone could clarify this and give me some tips if possible.

as you said there are plenty of 'opinitions', if you just walk into a bank....your chances these days are pretty much zero (freaking banks, its even tough for 'some' of us locals to open a bank account....keep in mind that if you have an account with 10k or more ....you are suposed to file a form with the IRS)

Wolfie what exactly do you do @ work? you ain't a tech guy right?

tech guy as in network administrator/firewall/router etc I am, that is what I do in one of the places I work at

tech guy as in web designer or programmer I am not, normally guys that develop web pages or applications dont bother much with firewalls or routers as long as things 'run' so you normally need both in a medium/big company

In the other job I am mostly a business consultant as I am an online bingo expert (I know .......:missingte )

Thanks for the responses. Lets say I am able to open an account would I have any trouble getting a E Wallet setup?

It probably wouldnt be much of an issue but you will almost for sure have to send them picture id/utility bills of the place you will be staying at/bank statements may be etc if their security department requires them

another thing to be aware of is that your deposits/withdrawals via said bank account will not be EFT/ACHs but bank wires or cashier checks

Hey freedom! I have a couple of bank account I don't use, let's put the money in there and we'll get you a duplicate of the card so you can use it. Sounds like a plan??

It's a lot easier if you have a reference from a current client of the bank.
