Even the white numbers are going down. the main poster said 30 percent or something. Baseball isn't what it used to be in this country IMO. Basketball and football are bigger.

The term "black" can also mean dark hispanic like those in the carribean. If they adjusted black to mean dark african descent then the number would be closer to 25%

i heard kieth olberman make an excellent arguement about the baseball TV schedule. his arguement was kids used to come home from school and have several baseball games to watch. i personally grew up watching the cubs after school. now these games are few and far between. His other main arguement was the world series games starting so late and often ending past midnight preventing the young kids and future of the game from watching the biggest games of nations past time. i think this trend only adds to less american kids, black or white, being intersted in the game.

baseball is hands down the best and fairest among the top sports around

the % of the players 'race' that play the game should not be an issue at all, hey but welcome to racist america

If I had a son I would point him in the direction of baseball.

More opportunities to actually make a roster and get paid. On top of longevity.

Career minor leaguers do pretty well financially.

what's your point? That's about equal to the percentage of blacks in america.

I actually agree with this point and don't understand why declining numbers of white or black players is an issue. It's baseball, not the House of Representatives.

If that's your goal, just hand him a golf club with his baby bottle.

Especially if he is left-handed and throws hard.

Reading the cover story of usa today friday, one can only wonder how loud the outcry would have been if same things were written and said about increasing white players in football, basketball, or baseball.

Of course, first of all, a similar story about whites would never get printed by any major newspaper.

A very one-sided article.

Baseball is boaring. It's amazing anybody really plays the sport because there is no way to prove you are a great athlete by limiting yourself to playing baseball.

Baseball should always have the worst athletes of all the major sports and that include tennis, boxing, and ect.

Who wants to play a sport like that?

It is great to bet on though and love it for that!

This was a hot topic on 'Cold Pizza' the other day.

They concluded that

#1 It's much less expensive to farm the hispanic talent over seas.

#2 Baseball doesnt have a great deal of appeal to young black americans.

#3 If the scouts tried harder to sign black talent, they could! But see #1.

What does boaring mean? Anyway no your wrong... baseball is the hardest game to play. Try hitting a 95 MPH fastball that is moving. Or a curveball that drops off the table at the very last second.

I think he is eluding to the fact that if you are a gifted athlete, your first choice isnt baseball.

What about Golf? Might be the most difficult sport in the world to play consistently great. What ever happened to the 'Tiger effect' ?! Wasnt that supposed to create more gifted black golf players?! It hasnt happened.

You have to have tunnel vision for a sport to excel. Not just young black athletes, but all the young athletes in general. They would rather focus on football or hoops.
