LIVINGSTON, Louisiana (AP) -- One of two prison inmates who escaped by slipping under a chain-link fence and scaling a ladder over razor wire was captured Sunday after a motorist spotted him walking along a highway. The second escaped inmate remained at large.

The two men, accused in separate killings, broke out of the Livingston Parish prison Saturday while they were out of their cells for an hour of exercise, Sheriff Willie Graves said.

Gerald Bordelon was captured by Livingston Parish sheriff's deputies and Louisiana State Police less than a mile from the prison, said sheriff's Detective Stan Carpenter.

"They got the bloodhounds in on him, and with the helicopters on him they just went in and picked him up," Carpenter said.

Bordelon awaits trial on murder and kidnapping charges in the death of his 12-year-old stepdaughter.

John Priest, who was still at large Sunday morning, was convicted Thursday night of manslaughter and obstruction of justice for killing a man and burning his house. Priest has said he killed Ralph Noland Jr. in self-defense.

Police continued their search for Priest in the woods around Interstate 12 and along railroad tracks where Priest's black-and-white prison shirt was found discarded.

Graves said Priest is considered dangerous, and police told residents to lock their cars and their homes.

I saw them searching on I-12 today when I was coming back to Mississippi from Lafayette. It made me a little nervous because I knew that they were still looking for the younger guy.

BULLETIN

Escaped killers back in custody

Acting on an anonymous phone tip, a Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office SRT team arrested escaped killer John Priest and two other men inside a camper trailer in Livingston Sunday night.

Priest’s 10:03 p.m. capture ended a day-and-half manhunt in the Livingston area for the second of two killers to escape the parish prison Saturday morning.

Confessed child killer Gerald Bordelon was captured Sunday morning in Livingston, just over 24 hours after he escaped with Priest.

Authorities continued searching an area in the town of Livingston near the convenience store where Bordelon was spotted, though it was believed the two men split up shortly after they slipped away from a breezeway where they were exercising around 9 a.m. Saturday. The escape prompted a manhunt through the nearby woods involving police agencies from throughout the Florida Parishes.

Sheriff Willie Graves said the escapees pulled back a chain link fence enclosing the breezeway, possibly with a pair of pliers found nearby, then used a ladder in the yard to scale the outer fence. He said he is uncertain who left the ladder there or whether any policies had been violated by jail personnel.

Deputies and police agencies, with the help of dog teams and helicopters, surrounded an area between the Holden and Satsuma exits of I-12 and posted spotters every quarter mile, where they kept vigil through day and night.

Priest was convicted Thursday night of manslaughter and obstruction of justice for killing a man and burning down the man's house. Priest said during the trial that he killed Ralph Noland Jr. in self-defense. Bordelon, 40, was awaiting trial for the murder of his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Courtney LeBlanc, whom he was accused of molesting. He confessed to the crime and led authorities to LeBlanc's body in a wooded area in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Sheriff's Detective Stan Carpenter said a concerned citizen called in a tip to authorities after spotting Bordelon in a wooded area about 1/4 mile east of the jail near a Chevron station and convenience store on La. 63. Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputies, joined by a dog chase team from Hunt Correctional Institute and a helicopter from the Pointe Coupee Sheriff's Office Aviation Division surrounded Bordelon and captured him without incident at 10:53 a.m., Carpenter said.

An anonymous phone tip Sunday night led to the arrest of Priest and two unidentified men, who will face charges of aiding and abetting the runaway. They were captued inside the camper trailer on Cedar Street, Carpenter said.

The suspects were undergoing questioning late Sunday night and further information was unavailable.
