KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee is looking into whether it committed another NCAA recruiting violation by allowing media to be present during a meeting between coach Lane Kiffin and recruits.
A segment of ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” which aired Sunday, showed Kiffin in his office with two people identified by the network as recruits.
According to NCAA recruiting rule 13.10.1, “A member institution shall not permit a media entity to be present during any recruiting contact made by an institution’s coaching staff member.”
Tennessee spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter confirmed the review, but declined further comment.
Tennessee has reported at least four minor recruiting violations since Kiffin was introduced as coach Dec. 1. Athletic director Mike Hamilton said recently the number isn’t any more than the school usually reports.

ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” segment, which recapped Kiffin’s first six months as coach of the Volunteers, also included a statement made by Kiffin’s former team, the Oakland Raiders.
Kiffin was fired in September for cause after what owner Al Davis described as acts of insubordination and lying. Kiffin filed a grievance and is seeking two months pay for the time he was unemployed before being hired at Tennessee.
“Lane Kiffin is a flat-out liar. He lied to the team, he lied to the fans, and he lied to the media,” the Raiders’ statement said. “He will try to destroy that university like he tried to destroy the Raiders, and will eventually clash with (women’s basketball coach Pat) Summitt and (men’s basketball coach Bruce) Pearl.”
Carpenter declined comment on the Raiders’ statement.

Coach: After a while it is guilt by association. I wish at seasons end someone would take the new coaching payroll and calculate how much it broke down to per win. The old saying "Sometimes you get what your pay for" may haunt Tenn for quite a while. At this point I don't even think winning can right the ship at least for 2009. Actually it could be stupid is the one without the T-Shirt (Oh I forgot that is where he drew the line).

There is NO way that either the coach nor the AD knew that this was not a violation. Again, this is recruiting 101 stuff.

This means that Kiffin and his AD are blatantly thumbing their noses at the NCAA. I am here to tell you who will laugh last in this scenario...

Just like the Raider spokesman said, "He will detroy the University just like he did the Raiders." He has no regard for rules and probably thinks anyone would do the same to him. At the fore front of all of this is the realization that he is way over his head and surrounding him with Daddy and others is not enough for him to continue to step on the dog doo. After while you just quit cleaning off your shoes. That is what it has come down to. Some people have said many SEC coaches will try to embarass him. At first I did not pay much attention to those remarks but you have to ask yourself what would you do in their shoes (not that some of those shoes don't have some dog doo too). At this point I think some of those coaches and their teams could come to the BBQ with a fork ready to stick it to "Wrong Lane" Kiffin. When you cross the line you pay a price.

yep.

I watched the OTL episode over at espn.com. While I am glad to have heard from his wife, (she is not ugly). What kind of head football coach allows his wife to defend him on national tv. At least she did a better job of it as witnessed by his tripping all over himself on his denials about pumping gas in SC...

I kind of picture Kiffin as the Forrest Gump of the coaching world. One thing leads to another and he just seems to fall into things and come out better off than he was before. There are a lot of people that can pay the price for his short comings. I do not see him as long term thinker/planner so we shall see.

more on Kiffin

'Gotcha' fluffery. On one hand, the Knoxville News-Sentinel shows readers exactly how much it actually costs to throw together a decent recruiting class during a high profile coaching transition: Just shy of $1.1 million. (Not including, of course, the salaries of the all-important recruiters.) On the other, it details the 'social' cost, in this case, in terms of yet another secondary recruiting violation:
Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin may have committed a sixth NCAA secondary recruiting violation since his hiring, this one resulting from a segment featuring him on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines.”
During the segment first televised Sunday, Kiffin is shown meeting and talking with a recruit. At the end of the segment, ESPN’s Bob Ley, host of the show, brought the possible violation to light.
“Now, Kiffin’s arrival has brought several secondary NCAA violations,” Ley said. “It is entirely possible that you just saw another one."
Because "media members" can't observe contact between coaches and recruits! We got you! Again! That is what's going on here, right, Vol fans?

Hahahahaha.

this speaks to the mentality of the boards resident UT expert. It's all espn's fault. What a bunch of Morons!!!!!

Poll: Do you think ESPN orchestrated a "gotcha" moment in its Outside the Lines report on Kiffin?

<table class="poll-results"><tbody><tr class="row1"> <td>Of course. I think they've had it out for UT for years.</td> <td>59%</td> <td>2957 votes</td> </tr> <tr class="row2"> <td>Probably not, but I wouldn't put it past them.</td> <td>28%</td> <td>1425 votes</td> </tr> <tr class="row1"> <td>Of course not. It was just bad timing and bad luck on UT's part.</td> <td>12%</td> <td>617 votes</td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="3"> 4999 total votes</td></tr></tbody></table>

The last time Kiffin raised his right hand was to wave bye bye to all the rules. I have never followed the SEC that much as far as recruiting battles go. Did this whole thing start after Meyer got to Florida and escalate with Kiffin or has this stuff been going on and just not been as high profile as it is now? When a team like Tenn spends 1.1 million on recruiting you have to know the stakes are high. But even in poker there are rules. You can bluff, you can hold, you can fold, or you can call. In recruting you don't even have any chips until after the cards are played.
Rules are rules just the same.

How did this guy even get into coaching, other than who his father is? What's his playing background? Here is his Wiki profile:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_Kiffin

This guy has basically been givin everything he has ever gotten in life. He was a scrub in college, didn't even play as a senior! Other than his dad's influence he has been mentored by some pretty solid coaches....but has proven absolutely NOTHING - except he doesn't know NCAA recruiting rules, he cannot successfully coach in the NFL, and he knows how to run his mouth. That's it!
