Philadelphia Park has announced that hometown hero Smarty Jones will make his final appearance at the track on Aug. 14 before going to stud.
While details are not finalized, plans call for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner to be paraded down the home stretch sometime during the middle of the racing program.
Gates will oepn to the public at 10:30 a.m., with the rest of the activities to be announced when they are finalized.
Smarty had initially been scheduled to run in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) and Philadelphia Park on Sept. 6, but those plans were scrapped when trainer John Servis reported the colt was not training as well as he would like. Then, on Monday it was announced that Smarty Jones' would not race again and would enter stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky.
