Marquette -5½
All of you should remember Marquette who stunnigly made the Final 4 of the Big Dance two seasons ago. Last year, the Golden Eagles only made the NIT, even though they were the #1 THREE-POINT SHOOTING squad in Conference USA. Marquette can still light it up behind the arc as veteran G Travis Diener (19 ppg, 6 apg)is back along with another sharp shooter on the wing (Steve Novack). Marquette also has a strong presence in the paint with 6-8 and 240 pound SENIOR C Marcus Jackson throwing his weight around. Marquette easily covered their game against Illinois State last night in the BCS Classic in a 60-32 rout. In that contest, the Golden Eagles showed that they can be a force DEFENSIVELY. That is critical because they are playing the ultimate "slow down" team in Air Force. In their first season under new head coach Joe Scott, the Flyboys made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 24 YEARS. Scott, who used to play at Princeton and learned the "slow down" attack, instantly tranformed Air Force into a high percentage offense and smothering defensive squad that was actually picked to finish last in the Mountain West Conference. Obviously, Scott did a spectacular job, however, there is a problem. Scott was lured by his alma-mater (Princeton) to be head coach in the offseason. That means Air Force has to adjust to the coaching style of one of Scotts' assistants (Chris Mooney). Even though Mooney is already 2-0 ATS out of the gate, and is keeping the same slow down style of play, I am not convinced they will be able to keep up with Marquette in the shooting department. The Falcons stepped up in competition twice last year and got smacked at Auburn (68-49) and in the Big Dance by North Carolina (63-52). Air Forces' first pair of games were against relative nobody's, so we are about to find out if they even resemble last year's effective squad. I am personally betting against it. Here is a 71-PERCENT SYSTEM (64-26 since 1997) that supports Marquette. Basically, you play ON home favorites of 3'-to-9' points in a NON-Conference affair, follwing a cover as a DOUBLE DIGIT favorite. Even better, Marquette is 11-3 ATS at home when coming off a double-digit victory.
GOOD LUCK
