OLY Prop Bet ... Will USC win the National Championship?

Can't remember the specific as to whether the question was National Championship or BCS National Championship, maybe someone can clarify. This prop bet was offered before the CFB season began.

Since the possibility exists of having a split national championship, would this bet still pay if USC shared a portion of the title? I suppose the all important factor of the bet is how the prop bet was worded by Olympic ...

Just thought this would be interesting to discuss. Please share your thoughts.

It would be the BCS version. But of course no one ever dreamed that this would happen anyway.

But the best thing to do would be to call Olympic and ask them

Appreciate the response. I didn't play it, but I remembered the prop bet that was offered, but I didn't pay too much attention to the wording, as I didn't dream of the possibility of having a split championship.

Chris, I'm not sure what you are saying here. Are you talking about the BCS vote or the BCS Championship game (Sugar Bowl)? If I remember correctly, the coaches in the past were forced to vote for the winner of the BCS Championship game (of course it never came up). Now they say that they won't force anyone to vote a certain way; the coaches conceivably could choose USC as #1 even if OU or LSU wins the Sugar Bowl.

WSEX's interactive wagering has had it listed as the winner of the Sugar Bowl; I assume this is how you are doing it right?

I could have swore that I heard in 1 of those polls they have NO CHOICE but to have the LSU/OK winner at #1. Hopefully Michigan wins and it won't matter.

This is the GRAND DADDY of them all, basically the ONLY gamne that has matterd the last 100 years. USC was basically the National Champions last year too. With 21 starters coming back next year will 3 pete for sure.

With the AP poll, the media can vote for any team they want.

But the coaches *have* to vote for the OK/LSU winner. It is part of the BCS contract.

Therefore, USC can't win the prop bet @ Olympic.

Aren't the coaches essentially "locked into" voting for the winner of the "official" BCS championship game?

I thought I had heard this somewhere-I don't think that they really have any choice (despite how stupid it may be).

Funk, the coaches aren't mandated to vote for a specific team according to this story. I haven't heard anything different.

I think Oly better get ready for a lot of bitching following the Sugar Bowl.

At the end of the Nokia Sugar Bowl between LSU and Oklahoma on Jan. 4 at the Superdome, the winner will receive a trophy from the American Football Coaches Association symbolic of the national championship.

But that same winner might not finish atop the poll the trophy is supposed to represent.
Jim Welch, deputy manager of sports for USA Today and the person who oversees the coaches poll, said Tuesday that the coaches are free to vote for a No. 1 team, contrary to AFCA instructions, and if enough do so to make it a "valid" poll, the results will be revealed.

"We'll just to have see what happens," Welch said. "If we consider it honest and fair, then we will publish the results. If not, then it's not a poll."

Correction. It isn't part of the BCS contract. That was misleading on my part.

In 1998, the coaches voted to make the BCS winner #1 in their poll.

Theoretically, some of the coaches *could* vote USC #1. But from what I've heard/read, the vast majority of the coaches plan to honor their 1998 vote and pick the OK/LSU winner. Maybe 2-3 coaches will make a stand and vote for USC, but it won't be enough to keep OK/LSU from #1.

"The coaches voted overwhelmingly in favor of giving their title to the BCS winner in 1998 and haven't wavered since. But there hasn't been a situation like this year, where the No. 1 team is out of the title game."

It still amazes me that nobody envisioned this scenario. With the inclusion of the computer rankings and SOS, there are going to be many years where a team that is #1 or #2 in the polls isn't going to make the BCS game.

It happened in 2001, when Nebraska (#4 in the polls) jumped Colorado and Oregon.

It happened in 2000, when Miami (#2 in the polls) was jumped by FSU (#3 in the polls).

It almost happened to an undefeated Va Tech in 1999. If a few games had gone the other way, Nebraska would've leap-frogged Va Tech in the BCS.
