With 1B Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list while he receives treatment for a benign tumor, the Yankees are close to signing former AL batting champion John Olerud, who was released by Seattle on July 23.

New York, NY, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees signed former American League batting champion John Olerud Tuesday.

The 35-year-old first baseman had been released by the Seattle Mariners in July.

Olerud, who joins the Yankees while their regular first baseman, Jason Giambi, is on the disabled list, won the AL batting title in 1993 with Toronto and is a three-time Gold Glove winner.

His career totals with the Blue Jays, New York Mets and Seattle include a .295 average and 244 home runs.

Olerud whines and cries to the Mariners about refusing a trade. Blocked San Diego, San Francisco, Etc. who were interested because
he didn't want to be away from his kid(s)! So they release him. I guess N.Y. is much closer to his home in suburban Seattle than any of the California teams that were interested in him! The washed up has been has nothing left. The teams he blocked trades to, he did them a favor.

So true Kevy. He supposedly could have gone to 4 or 5 teams and the M's asked him what trade he would accept. He said none, they told him well you will be optioned if you don't accept, and he still refused. Even worse, he supposedly was set to be a team coach in a year or two, but who knows after upsetting the brass like this.
