Coming off a 2-3 day in the bowl games winning with a rare 5* play on USC as well as a 1* play on Maryland. Our losses included a 3* play on Florida State and 1* losses on Florida and a heartbreaker on Purdue. Overall a modestly profitable day however. Today we will be looking at the first two games namely the Cotton Bowl with Mississippi vs Oklahoma State and the Peach Bowl with Tennessee vs Clemson. Be back later for analysis and selection for the Fiesta Bowl.
Cotton Bowl: Mississippi vs Oklahoma State
This game brings together an SEC/BIG-12 match-up. Mississippi plays out of the SEC and Oklahoma State plays out of the Big-12. Mississippi brings a balanced attack featuring QB Eli Manning and a complimentary running attack by committee. The defense is stout, particularly against the run and the special teams are solid. Oklahoma State brings a balanced attack as well featuring QB Josh Fields and also a complimentary running attack. The defense is average and has yielded points in a number of match-ups with quality opposition. The special teams are solid as well. We see two distinct differences in this match-up. First at quarterback where Manning is significantly superior to Fields and second on the defense where Mississippi has played in the tough SEC and held down quality opposition like LSU, Florida, Arkansas and Auburn to limited scoring. Oklahoma State has yielded significant scoring to the powers of the Big 12 but beat up of the soft teams. Hence,
1* Mississippi -2.5
Peach Bowl: Tennessee vs Clemson
This game brings together an SEC/ACC match-up. Tennessee plays out of the SEC and Clemson plays out of the ACC. Tennessee features QB Casey Clausen together with a complimentary running attack. The defense is solid although not exceptional. Special teams are average but capable. Clemson features QB David Whitehurst together with a complimentary running attack as well. The defense is solid as well and special teams are capable but nothing exceptional. Tennessee struggled against conference powers but beat up on the softer teams. Clemson beat Florida State, Virginia, Georgia Tech and non conference South Carolina while barely losing to North Carolina State. In a game that we view as fairly even, there is value in the line. Hence,
1* Clemson +6
Fiesta Bowl: Kansas State vs Ohio State
This game brings together a BIG-12/BIG-10 match-up. Kansas State plays out of the Big-12 and Ohio State plays out of the Big-10. Kansas State features a balanced double barreled attack with QB Eli Roberson, who won't start but will probably play, and RB Darren Sproles. Both are very talented and possess big play capability. The defense is solid both in stopping the run as well as the pass. Special teams are sound and very good. Ohio State features a modestly balanced attack led by QB Craig Krenzel and a complimentary set of running backs. The defense is pretty stout particularly against the run but can give up plays through the air at times. Special teams are very good in all phases. Feeling here is that defenses may prevail in this game thus keeping the game fairly close and there is value in the line. Hence,
1* Ohio State +7
Overall Unit Record YTD: (57-33.1) 63.26% 5*(1-0)(+5.0) 3*(6-2)(+11.4) 1*(34-24-2)(+7.5)
Overall W/L Record YTD: (41-26-2) 61.19%
NCAAF Record YTD: (18-7)(+20.1) (Bowl Game Record 16-7 Included)
NFL Record YTD: (6-6-1)(-2.9)
