Hard to believe, but there was life before the internet and smart phones. Before ESPN scrolling, Before so many TB game options. So how did a sports fan and/or gambler keep updated on scores?

Anyone remember Jerome Jurenovich on Headline Sports? We used to have to wait until the 20 and 40 past the hour for a Headline Sports update from Jerome Jurenovich. This was in the '80's

I remember somewhere around the year 2000, there was a # for a while I think it was something like 1-800-555-TELL that you could call in and it had all types of info including sports scores, but you had to speak your menu choice into the phone and it was not great technology so you found yourself yelling at it trying to get scores.

What other ways were there?

I remember before smart phones

You had to check the espn ticker to get any stats if you weren't home by your computer.

I remember one time I was drIrving to Florida during my fantasy playoff game and had to keep calling a buddy to get the stats.

In the early 80s I called a 976 number that was $1.99 for the first minute and 50 cents each additional minute. ....and of course they started with a 3 minute tout commercial.

Used to call some 800 number.. Some crazy sounding character (same guy every weekend) would really ham it up going through the games. Of course you'd have to sit through the touts advertisements, but those were entertaining as well. Of course we all almost got in trouble at work when we started getting junk mail from touts and offshore, as they eventually got the address from caller ID.

Used to have a sports pager and a 1-800 #.

I actually remember leaving the pager at home one time I went to the movies with my gf. Damned if I didn't dial the number and you'd have to say where you wanted to go. Half the time it would fuck up and you'd have to yell into it so here I am screaming "SPORTS"...."COLLEGE FOOTBALL"...."TOP 25" into my phone in the middle of a packed movie lol.

Those were the days.

Free 800 numbers sponsored by touts. You'd have to listen to them say they were 9 and 0 today and swear at you, sometimes using the "F" word to show you how sincere they were. After about a minute of abuse, you'd get a pretty good updated score list, starting with on-going games and then completed game scores.
