say you are dealt a straight off the bat and you have three cards in it leading for a
possible royal flush so what is your decision here,go for the royal or take the straight.this may decide on how many credits you at have or not have so also does
the amount of credits ,do they matter to you or not

Number of credits shouldn't affect your decision. The strategy charts say you should take the straight. You should throw away the 3 cards to a royal even with a high pair.
Although, with 4 to a royal, you should throw away hands as high as a flush (full house not possible w/ 4 to a straight).

I use this table:

http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/strategy/jacks-or-better/9-6/intermediate/

  1. Four of a kind, straight flush, royal flush
  2. 4 to a royal flush
  3. Three of a kind, straight, flush, full house
  4. 4 to a straight flush
  5. Two pair
  6. High pair
  7. 3 to a royal flush
  8. 4 to a flush
  9. Low pair
  10. 4 to an outside straight
  11. 3 to a straight flush (type 1)
  12. AKQJ unsuited
  13. 2 suited high cards
  14. 4 to an inside straight with 3 high cards
  15. 3 to a straight flush (type 2)
  16. KQJ unsuited
  17. QJ unsuited
  18. JT suited
  19. KQ, KJ unsuited
  20. QT suited
  21. AK, AQ, AJ unsuited
  22. KT suited
  23. One high card
  24. 3 to a straight flush (type 3)
  25. Discard everything

You keep the the straight. I 'd keep a pair of Jacks over 3 to a royal.

Royal flush won't have that many chances so go for it.

It's all about making the right EV decisions. If you play enough hands the royals will come, I've hit plenty of them. But if you make wrong decisions like the one you suggest, you're throwing away money.

Why do people answer with opinion when there are facts to back up the correct play? Like FZ posted

The same people will go against basic strategy in blackjack, because they've got a hunch or a superstition...
