Croce IMO...

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
Till Eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

Guess you never listen to him much...Chapin died way too soon...

well, I am limited to what they play on the radio. The deeper tracks can be real gems. I agree Harry died badly ( auto accident, I think ?).

These guys were a bit before my time....I was a kid when they died, I think !

Great question, great group of singers/writers. Doesn't make sense to add others to the mix, as the question was among the three.
Chapin, not just for Cats in the Cradle, which hit close to home for me, but for Taxi.

James Taylor.

He's my favorite artist of all time by a long shot and I'm only 25 years old so it's not a generational thing. I've seen him in concert three times and loved every show. He's one of the few who sounds just as good live and in person as on a record.

Love love love sweet baby james...

James Taylor. The additional music he created over his career with Carly Simon and Carol King only add and enhance his long repetoire that spans now into the present. From a collective body of work aspect, one could argue that James Taylor has contributed more to the music community as a songwriter and musician.

I think if Croce had lived he would have far surpassed these two other artists. His carrer really didn't get started until 1970 and ended in 1973. He had 11 singles in that short period. His carrer was a lot like Buddy Holly's. He put out one hit after another in a very short period of time before tragically dying in a plane crash. Chapin on the other hand, could have very well been on the tail end of his carrer when he died. Elektra Records dropped him and all he could find was a deal on a small record label shortly before his death. Plus with disco and the 80's there wasn't much room left for folk rock artists during that period like there was in the 60's and 70's.
