Can anyone think of a more important game in the series other than the 7th game in which to put Weaver in??? For the Yankees to win this game would put them up 3-1, almost insurmountable. Now it's 2-2 and the Marlins have the momentum.

Where was Rivera?

Rivera has seen a lot of action lately. Torre would have went to him had the Yanks taken a lead in any of the extra innings. For Torre to put him in a tie game when he was up 2 to 1 in games is unlikely.

One of the key elements in betting the Marlins tonight was that NO WAY Rivera would pitch late w/o a lead. The rest of that Yankee pen has been very hittable.

I have to confess, when 'cappping the game, not even I dreamed of Torre trying to get 2 INN from Weaver in a tie game

I thought we'd only see him if the Yankees were down 4+ runs late.

I've often wondered why aces like Rivera, Gagne and Smoltz only go in when their team is ahead, rather than when they are tied. Any ideas?

Let's say tommorrow night, Wells has a 4-2 lead after 7 1/3 INN. Torre can ask Mariano to nail down the win.

If he had used Mariano for 2 INN's tonite and the Yankees didn't score, Torre would have still had to use my favorite pitcher tonight- Jeff Weaver.

It would then be doubtful Rivera would be available for Thursdays game. Rivera going 2 innings last night, put Torre in a bad spot tonight.

CF:

That's using the condition "if the Yanks don't score". What if Rivera holds the Marlins and the Yanks score in the next inning? Then Rivera shuts them out in the bottom of that inning.

Why put Weaver in now when putting in Rivera might prevent having to use Weaver?

The main reason being Rivera's impact value.

The value of Rivera is much higher with a lead than it is when the score is tied.

Torre MUST cover his arse for tommorrow night. If the Yankees are ahead late, bringing in Rivera is almost locks it up. If he uses him up tonite, he has to get a run to create value in the move. If he uses Rivera up tonight, rendering him unavailable for tommorrow and the Yankees don't score, Torre wastes his ace. That BG, is the condition that kept Mariana out of tonight's game.

Why couldn't Pettitte throw and bump Moose in the rotation?

You most likely don't need a game 7 if you take a 3-1 lead.

Oh well, pretty anti-climatic to see that piece of crap come in. Honestly, I turned the end of Leno on as soon as I saw him coming in. It was over.

Off topic, but you have to admire the Fish & their fans for standing to applaud Clemens.

That organization is pure class

IMO- Torre should've done anything that didn't include using Weaver. I sincerely doubt he would've heard anyone say "Joe, why the hell didn't you use Jeff !!! dammitt

He made a poor coaching decision last night up 6-1, letting Rivera pitch the 9th to get credited for the save. It's that mentality of trying to be fair to your ace, that puts you in bad positions...

just ask Grady...

Cardfather - do you get credit for a save if you're up 6-1? I don't know if post season is different from regular season but you wouldn't normally.

Rivera came in with a 1 run lead. You get credit for a save if you enter a game with a 3 run lead or less and close it out, or if you enter with the tying run on deck and close it out, or if you pitch at least 3 innings effectively and close it out.

little does anyone know, but weaver would put up some zeroes after that inning. too bad it was extra innings and the bottom half.

The big reason why the fish won was..that Looper pulled a Rivera in that he came in to hold down a tie ballgame..much like Rivera does sometimes.
