Loz and Tully. It sounds a bit like a TV cop duo, a la "Starsky and Hutch" or "Crocket and Tubbs." But there's far less drama with this pair of Australian hardcourt superstars. A superstar post should get along smashingly with the point guard who can get her the ball. And reigning WNBA MVP Lauren (Loz) Jackson of the Storm certainly does get along with Fever guard Tully Bevilaqua. The duo, which won the 2004 WNBA championship with Seattle and helped lead their native country to the 2006 world championship, will be teaming up again in Beijing.
WNBA.com's Adam Hirshfield spoke with the two longtime Opals prior to the Olympic break to get their thoughts on the importance of the 2008 Games, their rivalry with the USA and their predictions for who will be wearing gold.
WNBA.com: In a nutshell, can you handicap the Aussie team heading into the 2008 Games in Beijing?

Bevilaqua: "We are going to be a pretty tough unit. Likewise, so are the U.S. and Russia. And so is China. It is just going to be an awesome Olympics because the standard of basketball is going to be raised. But obviously you got Loz and you got Penny Taylor, who is also right up there with Lauren as a world-class player. Those two players are the people we center a lot of our stuff around. Everyone else is trying to complement them as much as we can."
WNBA.com: Having won the World Championships in 2006, do you feel like you are the favorites heading into Beijing?

Bevilaqua: "No, as the previous Olympic gold medalists, I think the U.S. is still going in as the favorites, which is good for us. We have always been the underdog. That is the way we like it. We are just a great group of people that work well as a team."

WNBA.com: Are you feeling any added pressure as the reigning world champs?

Jackson: "Of course, going into anything like the Olympics, you want to win for your country and, for me, winning an Olympic gold medal is the ultimate goal. I mean, I think I could retire off that. But realistically, it is very, very tough going against the Americans and I am not going to deny that. But you never know what is going to happen on the day of the gold-medal game or the silver-medal game or the semifinals. There are so many things that can contribute to the outcome of it, so it is going to be tough. But we are definitely going in there with a particular goal in mind."
WNBA.com: What is the rivalry like between the Aussies and the Americans?

Jackson: There is definitely a rivalry there and obviously the Americans have come out on top in most of the matchups. But we are definitely getting better with world championships and some other games over the past few years where we just pulled ahead. But it's never the same with the Olympics. We know that they will be going full strength. Being Australian and a patriot to my country, we are going to give our very all."
WNBA.com: What is it like going against players like Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings, who you know very well?

Jackson: "It is going to be tough. Sue and Diana in particular are two of my closest friends in the world, so it is going to freak me out a little bit. Especially when right after the WNBA season, we are all going back to Russia together, the way we usually do. But like I said, I am Australian, and I am going out to give it my very all. That day when (a matchup between us and the U.S.) comes (in Beijing), we are going to be fighting a war."

Bevilaqua: "(Fever teammate Tamika and I) haven't actually talked about it. We had a few little casual jokes about it. But we really haven't talked seriously about it."

WNBA.com: Who do you feel closer to: your WNBA team, your winter club team or the Australian national team?

Bevilaqua: "I have a great relationship with all of my teammates. I might not see Lauren for seven months and we meet up again and it is just like old times. We don't lose that friendship at all even though we are miles away from each other. There is certainly no difference in how I respect my teammates and how I get along with my Aussie teammates. I think I just do a good job of keeping friendships wherever I go."

Jackson: "With Spartak (Moscow in Russia), it was great. We were living together. We did everything together 24/7. So that was awesome. But the girls on the Australian team, Tully, Belinda… they are like my sisters and they are the people I grew up with, people I admire and respect. If anything ever happened, they are the people I would turn to. I think the closeness that we have is special. And when we won the gold at the World Championships, I think our chemistry was really obvious, given that we have been playing together so long."
WNBA.com: Does winning at one level or another mean more to you?

Bevilaqua: "A lot of people talk about world championships, a lot of people talk about the Olympics. A lot is put on the Olympics, I think, because of the whole experience of being there with the other athletes and that total experience of being around everybody else. So it would be very special for me to be a part of that and will probably be the pinnacle of my career."

WNBA.com: What is the fan support like Down Under?

Jackson: "It is all relative, I think, because of how many people we have in (the U.S.) compared to how many people we have in our country. I think on an equal scale, we probably have the same percentage of fans."

WNBA.com: Are the fans in Australia as crazy, as excited and as knowledgeable as the basketball fans in the States?

Jackson: "Our fans are very knowledgeable, for sure. I think that is their thing. The people that do follow it know the sport really well. They aren't crazy, but it is pretty much the same wherever you go."

WNBA.com: What message would you like to give to all of the WNBA fans who will be watching you in a different uniform than most of the players they will be rooting for in Beijing?

Jackson: "I expect all of you to be cheering for the Americans, and I will be doing my thing for my country. The fans are great regardless. They make the sport."

WNBA.com: What do you foresee happening in a few weeks in Beijing?

Bevilaqua: "Australia versus U.S. in the gold-medal game. Then whoever brings their 'A' game…"

USA Women’s National Team Runs Away With 93-58 Victory Over Russia

Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) scored 21 points, Sylvia Fowles (Chicago Sky) added 15 and Candace Parker (Los Angeles Sparks) contributed 12 as the 2008 USA Basketball Women’s National Team (2-0) defeated rival Russia (0-2) 93-58 at the 2008 FIBA Diamond Ball Tournament on Monday night in Haining, China.
The win sets up a championship game tomorrow night (7:30 p.m. EDT) against defending world champion Australia (2-0), which, as expected, had no problem putting away Mali (0-2) 112-43 in today’s earlier game.
“I thought we were in a total rhythm tonight offensively and it was predicated off our defense,” said USA head coach Anne Donovan, a three-time Olympian. “We were aggressive defensively, we got after it, and therefore our transition to our offense really was aggressive as well. So, I was pleased. This really was a great game for us.”
The U.S. never trailed in the game, running out to a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes, and by the end of the first quarter the red, white and blue was up 17-10.

Russia struck first in the second quarter, but Tina Thompson (Houston Comets) hit a bucket, Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) swished in a pair from the charity stripe and Katie Smith (Detroit Shock) found the bottom of the net from afar to open up a 24-13 advantage with 7:39 to go before halftime. A lapse in the USA defense allowed a Russian field goal at the 7:18 mark, but that would be the final field goal for the Europeans for the ensuing 7:15.
Improving on its defensive effort after just four practices and one game, the USA took advantage on the offensive end. Thompson converted on an offensive board at 7:04, sparking a 19-2 run that blew the game wide open, 43-17, with 31 seconds to play before the break. The run was an impressive all-around showing as six players scored, including Taurasi, who scored two from the line, nailed a 3-pointer and hit a jumper during that span.
By halftime the U.S. had the game well in hand, 43-19.
“We just wanted to get some things done that we didn’t do yesterday,” said Taurasi. “Coach Donovan talked about it before the game, and we were just trying to accomplish those goals. We did a pretty good job of putting 40 minutes together of just hard basketball, and that's what we are trying to accomplish every time we step on the court.”
The Americans pulled further away to start the second half, thanks in part to a pair of threes from Taurasi and Smith that made it a 30-point game, 53-23, with 6:45 to go. Russia’s long ball began to fall as the opponents hit five straight and capped their third quarter scoring with a basket from Tatiana Schegoleva that narrowed the game to 59-40 at 2:34. But that was as close as the Russians would get as the U.S. lead was simply too much to overcome. Parker swished six-of-six from the line, and Fowles got a put-back and at the end of three it was the USA 67-40.
From there the Americans cruised through the fourth quarter, outscoring the Russian women 26-18 to cap the night.
“As a team obviously last night against Latvia we came out and we weren’t playing as intensive defense as we could,” said Parker. “Tonight we came out and played much better, full-court, up in your face defense for 40 minutes, and I think that’s why we were able to win.”
Every member of the team scored against Russia, and in addition to the scoring efforts of Fowles, Parker and Taurasi; Kara Lawson (Sacramento Monarchs) was credited for team-highs of four steals and three assists; while Thompson grabbed a team-best six boards to go with eight points. Cappie Pondexter (Phoenix Mercury) and Smith also tossed in eight points.

mproving on its defense from its Aug. 3 contest against Latvia, the U.S. had 18 steals and forced 26 Russian turnovers, while outrebounding its foes by a whopping 42-26 margin. The Americans also held Russia to a frigid 37.1 percent (23-62 FGs) shooting from the field, while connecting on a red-hot 58.3 percent (35-60 FGs) of its tries. Schegoleva, who hit all four of her shots from beyond the arc, including three in the third quarter, was Russia’s high scorer with 14 points.
“I think Australia has been playing great basketball. When you look at Australia right now, you can tell they have been together for a while,” commented Donovan on the USA’s next opponent. “And the nice thing about Australia, when Lauren (Jackson) comes off the floor, when Penny (Taylor) comes off the floor, the rest of that team is used to playing without them. So although Lauren and Penny obviously are great players, they don't lose that much without them. So we expect it to be a great game, and I'm looking forward to that matchup.”
The Aug. 5 games will begin with a 2:00 p.m. (2:00 a.m. EDT) face-off for fifth place between Russia and Mali, while host China (1-1) takes on Latvia (1-1) in the third-place game, set to tip at 4:00 p.m. (4:00 a.m. EDT).

Paced by the double-double of three-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie (Los Angeles Sparks), who recorded 14 points and 10 boards, the 2008 USA Basketball Women’s National Team (3-0) survived a classic battle against world champion Australia (2-1) for a 71-67 victory and the 2008 FIBA Diamond Ball gold medal on Tuesday night in Haining, China.
Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), who shot 5-of-6 from the field for 11 points; Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury), who had six points and three assists against Australia; and Candace Parker (Los Angeles Sparks), who notched 12 points and eight boards, were named to the 2008 FIBA Diamond Ball All-Tournament Team. The trio was joined by China forward Sui Feifei and tournament MVP Lauren Jackson of Australia.
In consolation play Russia (1-2) defeated Mali (0-3) 79-52 for fifth place, and host China (2-1) took the bronze medal with a 63-51 victory over Latvia (1-2).
“Definitely (these two teams) bring out the best in each other,” said USA head coach Anne Donovan, a three-time Olympian and an assistant coach on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. “I think the familiarity for our players with Australia for us, both in the WNBA and internationally when they play in the leagues in the winter, I think they just know each other very well. The top level athlete is so competitive, and they have so much pride, that it wouldn’t matter if they were playing for marbles. I think they’d go just as hard. This was great to see, and it was great preparation. Absolutely the best preparation we could have going into next week.”

As is expected every time these two teams face each other the game is a battle from the tip, and this one was no exception. The first quarter alone featured five lead changes and four knotted scores as the U.S. edged Australia 16-15.
Australia retook the lead with the second quarter’s first basket to go up 17-16. Kara Lawson (Sacramento Monarchs) hit a three to kick-off a 9-0 run, and the U.S. was up 25-17, never again falling behind. By the 1:47 mark the USA’s lead grew to its largest of the night, 35-23.
However, with 34.9 seconds before the break, Penny Taylor was sent to the line. After making both, Tully Bevilaqua stole the inbounds pass and Australia got two quick points. Australia then came up with the rebound after a Suzy Batkivic block, Taylor banked in an off-balanced shot with two seconds remaining, and by halftime the USA’s lead was clipped to 35-29.
“Tonight was a tough one. Australia is a very, very good team and we were fortunate to pull it out,” said Bird. “We’ve only had five, six practices together, this was our third game as a unit and we've gotten better every game. That's a good sign. We still have eight more to go but as long as we continue to get better, get after it out there and work towards our talent, I think we’ll be okay.”
Foul trouble again plagued the United States, which had five players whistled for two fouls apiece in the first half. At 8:59 in the third quarter Katie Smith (Detroit Shock) was pulled after her third infraction. By the 3:11 mark in the third Seimone Augustus (Minnesota Lynx), Sylvia Fowles (Chicago Sky) and Leslie had all picked up their third fouls. Australia took advantage of the USA’s sitting stars and knotted the score twice, the second at 50-all at 1:24.
The refuse-to-lose attitude honed by years of championship play by U.S. veterans and younger players alike spurred a 6-0 run in the final minute of the quarter to bring the score to 56-50 with 10 minutes to play. Parker worked her way inside and converted on an offensive board, Lawson snared the ball away from the Aussies, was fouled sprinting up the court and swished in both of her free throws, and Taurasi ended the quarter on a driving layup.
Australia continued to claw back, but the U.S. would not back down. With the Americans up 67-65, Bird came up with a loose ball, passed it up the court to Taurasi, who hit Leslie with a no-look pass to up the ante to 69-65 at 2:10. Taylor scored on the other end, but Tina Thompson (Houston Comets) had an answer for the game’s final points at 1:09.
From there, the USA’s relentless defense forced a shot-clock violation but the Americans coughed the ball up shortly after. With 10 seconds to go Thompson stripped Kristi Harrower, and the USA dribbled out the clock to collect the gold medal.

Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever), who recently returned from an Achilles injury, was given the night off to rest for the Olympic Games next week.
While the USA was outrebounded by Australia by a narrow 41-39 margin, the U.S. defense held the Aussies to 35.8 percent (24-67 FGs) of its tries from the floor while connecting on 42.6 percent (29-68 FGs) of its own. Both teams were red-hot from the foul line with the U.S. hitting a near-perfect 11-of-12 and Australia making 17-of-19.
Taylor was Australia’s top scorer with 19 points, while Jackson added 16.

Leslie, USA search for more gold
BEIJING — Lisa Leslie served notice Thursday of what she expects of the USA in the Olympic basketball tournament.
"We're excited to face the world," she said. "We're excited to continue our …" — and here she paused just briefly — "dominance of the world."
The word was carefully chosen. Leslie has played in three Olympics and her team has won gold each time. Now, in her fourth and final Games, she anticipates gold once more.
Leslie said this during brief remarks from the podium at a news conference. Then, after the formal program, the 6-5 center was surrounded by a gaggle of reporters and asked about the boldness of her declaration.
"I feel like if you look at the history, we have been dominant," she said. "And I have three gold medals to prove it. I came here for a fourth one. I'm just hoping we can do that. I don't mean that in a cocky way but just in a level of confidence."

Gold won't be as easy as Leslie's language suggests. The 12 members of the U.S. team have been together for little more than a week, since the WNBA went into its Olympic break. Add to that the fact that the world is catching up. Australia won the world championship in 2006.
"We have the best players in the world, one through 12," Leslie said. "We're excited about that but we're very humble. Obviously we lost in the world championship and that's always in our mind. We can be beaten if we don't perform."
What Leslie neglected to mention is she did not play in that world championship. She sat out after her uncle was paralyzed in an accident.

The U.S. Olympic team won three tune-up games in China, including a hard-fought 71-67 victory against Australia that was noteworthy for its hard picks and sharp elbows. Australian reporters asked Leslie about Aussie players' complaints that the game was too rough.
"I don't know about it being overly physical," Leslie said. "I don't know when Australia and the U.S. have ever met when it has not been physical."
Leslie said international play is typically rougher than the WNBA: "We're mentally more prepared to play a more physical game when we put that USA uniform on."
It's too early to talk about Australia anyway. The USA opens pool play Saturday against the Czech Republic and will play other games against host China, Mali, Spain and New Zealand. Traditional rivals Australia and Russia are in the other pool; the USA won't face either until at least the quarterfinals. Brazil, Korea, Latvia and Belarus are also in the other pool.
Leslie can become the first woman to win four consecutive Olympic gold medals in basketball. Teresa Edwards, her former teammate, won four golds but not consecutively. (Edwards won a bronze medal in 1992. The American women have not lost an Olympic game since that year and are riding a 25-game Olympic win streak.)
What does Leslie think of her chance to make history with four consecutive golds?
"I haven't really thought about it like that," she said. "I thought about it more that I'd love to just only have gold medals. The fact that I have three, I would like to have a fourth and take lots of pictures.
"That's kind of my visual. I would like to take pictures of four gold medals around my neck and call it a day."

The Skinny: Some consider the Opals to be the favorites heading into Beijing, especially after claiming the 2006 World Championship over Russia and the United States. And given their talent-filled roster which includes reigning WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson and 2007 WNBA champs Penny Taylor and Belinda Snell, it's tough to argue with them. Unlike the U.S. team, most of this roster has been playing together for years, and after winning bronze in Atlanta (1996) and silver medals in both Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004), this could be the year for the Aussies.
Teresa Says: The U.S. just beat them in the Diamond Ball Tournament leading up to the Olympics, but I think they will be the Americans' toughest opponents in Beijing. They're in Group A, which is the tougher of the groups, but that could actually be to their advantage in helping them get up to a higher level of intensity prior to the knockout rounds. With their experience and with several players who are legitimate stars in the WNBA, I feel like they might just be in position to peak at the Olympic Games. They know that if they don't win gold in Beijing, they're never going to win it with this nucleus of players.

The Skinny: Much like Latvia below, Belarus overcame both expectations and some fairly considerable odds to reach Beijing. Based on their ranking, they could end up being in over their heads in China. But an overtime win over Brazil in Madrid earned them this spot, and their strong, athletic frontcourt could surprise some folks.
Teresa Says: This is a team that has nothing to lose. They play with a Russian style and surprised a lot of people in even making it here, but they don't want it to end there. They want to surprise some teams. And they could, because they have some really big-bodied girls with some presence on the inside. Leuchanka, for one, is so physical and always gives you everything she has out there. I think they'll surprise someone in the early going, but they'll need to stay consistent to do it.

The Skinny: Historically a skilled, athletic team that can get very hot at times, Brazil comes into Beijing ranked fourth in the world. Though they don't appear to have the talent of the late '80s and early 90s, they have played well historically in Olympic competition, earning a silver in Atlanta in 1996, a bronze medal in Sydney and fourth place in Athens. They also won the World Championship in 1994.
Big-time scorer Iziane Castro Marques was kicked off the team for a disagreement with coach Paulo Bassul at the Olympic qualifying tournament, and that removes some inner strife from the equation. But it also removes some scoring punch, and that's where the Brazilians will need to step up.
Teresa Says: Not having Iziane Castro Marques definitely hurts this bunch. But even without her, Brazil is an emotional team. Once they get on that rollercoaster, it seems like their shots can't miss. So this is a team that needs to be happy to play its best. They feed off each other very well and they're typically a quick group that likes to play a lot of up-and-down. But the whole situation with Izi leaving the team seems to have helped them band together a bit… but that could wear off real quick if they lose early and allow reality to set in. They'll be undersized against most of their opponents, but you can't match their hearts.

The Skinny: After finishing a surprising fourth at the EuroBasket tournament, Latvia annihilated Angola 84-26 to earn this spot in Beijing, and they're definitely a team on the rise.
Teresa Says: Jekabsone-Zogota was one of the leading scorers in the Diamond Ball Tournament -- and had a big day against the USA -- and has played really well in the EuroLeague for Dynamo Moscow over the last few seasons. Zane Teilane had a little run in the WNBA, too, so she's capable of bringing it inside. But as a whole, you have to pay attention to any team that played the U.S. as closely as they did. That impressed me.

The Skinny: Russia topped a talented field to win the 2007 EuroBasket title, earning this spot in Beijing with a solid group of veteran talent. Having defeated the USA and eventually winning silver at the 2006 World Championships in Brazil should also give this squad the confidence to compete with the best in Beijing. And though there are questions surrounding the impact Becky Hammon will have on this team, if she and the talented Russian posts can put it together, they'll again be in the running for a medal.
Teresa Says: They surprised everyone by finishing fifth out of six teams in the Diamond Ball tournament, but there's something you need to know about Russia. They're never at their best in the pre-tournaments or even in pool play. But when it comes down to the medal rounds, they're a totally different package. They don't disappoint when the tournament's on the line. They're the ones who caught the U.S. by surprise at the World Championships.
Anyway, there's a lot of talent on this team. Becky Hammon is obviously a tremendous player, though I have reservations about how quickly she'll be able to gel with the rest of the European-style Russian squad. Even though they need a point guard, they won't like the fact that she shoots as much as she does. Stepanova is very solid inside… when she steps up and plays her game, they're typically very successful. But beyond her and their other starters, I don't think they have a ton of depth down low. I'll never count 'em out because they have great shooters. And I don't think they'll let Becky shoot as much. And when they play more carefully, they're capable of playing with anybody.

The Skinny: The Koreans claimed their 13th continental title since 1965, beating China in the process. They beat New Zealand in an Olympic test event, but they also fell to Cuba in the same tourney.
Teresa Says: Jung Sun-Min had a short run in the WNBA, and I think this is another team that could surprise some people in China. They're so disciplined! They know they're undersized, but they play so intelligently. They play a half-court game so quick you won't believe your eyes. And their shooters are remarkably proficient. You haven't seen many teams that can shoot like this. I've played against Korean teams before, and you always wonder how they make it as far as they do. But they do it because they're disciplined, they play hard from start to finish and they're one of the best-prepared teams in the world.

The Skinny: In front of their home fans, China won bronze at the pre-Olympic Diamond Ball tournament. Could that be a precursor of things to come in the Olympics? Having won bronze at the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and a silver in Barcelona in 1992, expectations will be high this time around for the Chinese.
Teresa Says: This is another team that's really efficient in the backcourt. Sui Feifei played in the WNBA a few years back and she made the all-tournament team for the Diamond Ball, so you know she's capable of doing something special. They have two players who are 6-5 and two more who are 6-4. That's tall for China. And China beat the U.S. in the Good Luck Beijing tournament back in April. Not to mention the home-court advantage of playing in front of your own fans. They'll be very motivated and they're very disciplined.

The Skinny: The fifth-place finishers at the 2007 EuroBasket competition, the Czechs won all three of their games at the Olympic qualifying tournament, coming from behind to beat a tough Japanese squad in the quarterfinals. Jan Bobrovsky's roster is full of players who have excelled at the national and European levels, but it remains to be seen whether or not they can compete with the best in the world.

Teresa Says: This is a really tough, hard-playing team. But they've simply never had the talent of the U.S. or the other top teams in the world. They're closing the gap, but I still don't think they're quite to that elite level.

The Skinny: Simply qualifying for the women's basketball competition at the Olympics is an amazing story for this team. They shocked perennial power Senegal in the FIBA Africa Championship final in front of their own fans to earn this spot, the first ever continental championship for the nation, and also took down Angola in a knockout-round game.
Teresa Says: They're the lowest ranked team to make the Olympics, and, frankly, they surprised everyone by qualifying in the first place. They do have a solid WNBA player in Hamchetou Maiga-Ba, who I really like and who will be a leader for this group… but I'm gonna roll out of my bed and fall on my head if they win a game in Beijing.
No one figured they'd make it this far and it seems to me like they're getting in over their heads. The first time I was in the Olympics, I was just happy to be there… and I didn't know what I was doing. (Thank god the coaches realized that and kept me out of the game as long as they could! We were led at the time by a woman named Pat Head… maybe you've heard of her. We'd be up 30 or 40 points, I'd still be sitting on the bench and I'd be thinking, "Wow, you think I can really mess THIS up?") And that's kind of how I picture Mali to be: They're going to be representing their country that's already proud of them. But they're going to have a tough time against this level of competition.

The Skinny: The Tall Ferns, as they're called, tend to rule the Oceanic region with their Australian neighbors. But that's not saying much given that they earned their 2008 Olympic spot with a 118-31 defeat of Fiji. There are some solid players on this roster... in fact, this team reached the Olympic quarterfinals at Athens 2004. But they don't have the level of talent of the Opals. Not by a longshot.
Teresa Says: With UConn-committed teen center Jessica McCormack, U.S.-raised Jillian Harmon and Clare Bodensteiner (who both played at Stanford) and Oregon guard Micaela Cocks all expected to be suiting up for the Tall Ferns in Beijing, they'll bring some American style to their team. Captain Aneka Kerr and point guard Angela Marino both have Olympic experience, having made the trip to Athens in 2004. They're a very young team, but they played Australia (without Lauren Jackson) tough recently, so they clearly have a lot of fight.

The Skinny: This will be the third Olympic appearance for the constantly improving Spanish side, and though this team has never left the Games with a medal, it should be fielding one of the world's better sides this time around. Recent injuries to Valdemoro and Palau could play a major role, but point guard Nuria Martinez should be healthy after suffering from tendinitis in her hand.
Teresa Says: This is a team with a lot of experience at the international level that plays your prototypical European style of basketball. They're very skilled -- even their bigs -- and they play very hard. Amaya Valdemoro is really a tremendous player who's been around for a while now. She can drop 30 on any given night, even in an international competition. Her recent injury, though, forced the rest of the team to step up and improve while she was away. They've done that, and I really feel like they could contend for a medal.

The Skinny: You know the story: three straight Olympic golds but a disappointing bronze at the 2006 World Championships. After several recent setbacks -- including two losses at the Good Luck Beijing tournament in April -- it's fair to say that the rest of the world is catching up to the USA. But it's also fair to say, particularly with the return of Lisa Leslie, that this is one of the finest collections of basketball talent in the history of the women's game. Literally any of the players could lead the team in a given game and the second wave off the bench could prove to be just as dangerous as the first. With a powerful mix of youth and experience, inside and outside, offense and defense, coach Anne Donovan has all of the tools to run the table.
Teresa Says: Defense has always proven to be a thorn in our side in these tournaments, and that's maybe because the timing makes it tough to put a solid team defense together. The team recognizes that now, and they seem to be really buying in to that defensive mentality. That's going to be a major key for the USA earning a fourth straight Olympic gold.
Offensively, we're stacked. We have the inside dominance, we have the athletic, slashing scorers and we have pure shooters out there. Sue Bird will definitely get the job done at the point -- that will be no worries at all. What this team must understand is that they must keep getting better as the Olympics go on… not relaxing because they're winning games by a lot of points. And they have to keep putting together 40-minute games.
I'm excited to watch them play because the effort they've put forth since they've come together is just tremendous. Under the strain of playing overseas and coming to the WNBA and finally coming together for the U.S. squad, I'm totally impressed with how far they've come. Right now, I have to say they're the favorites to win, and as long as they come ready to play 40 minutes in every game, I think they'll stay that way.
