Thanks For The Answer.........I'll Tell Him it's 1/4 Sq Feet, but The Only Problem Is.......He Has To Show How He Got The Answer.

Green Dob....Any Help W/ That Would Be Much Appreciated!

First thing you want to do is reduce the second fraction. Since both 81 and 144 are divisible by 9 you divide the numerator and the denominator by 9.

81/9= 9 and 144/9=16,

Now your problem looks much simpler at 4/9 of 9/16. Both the 9's cancel each other out (ask for the multiplicative property, I can't remember it) and you have 4/16. Divide numerator and denominator by 4 and you get 1/4.

The point of most math problems is to reduce them to numbers less than 12. That is why we only learned our times tables up to 12 X 12.

That should be done the same way as the other:

45/64 x 4/5 = cancel the 5 into 45 and the 4 into 64 = 9/16

Let me show you a shortcut:

Take the 45/64 and ignore the 64.

Now figure 4/5 of 45.

That would be 45/5 X 4 or 36.

Now put the 36 on top of the 64.

Find the greatest common denominator (4). Divide both by it.

You get your answer 9/16.

Ask him what chapter of the math book this is. I suspect it deals with reducing fractions using greatest and least common denominators.

45/64 = (9*5)/(8*8)

so you have (9*5)/(8*8)*4/5 (write it down in real fraction form to visualize it better)

the 5's cancel out, and you can cross out the 4 if you make one of the 8's a 2, because you're dividing both by 4

that leaves you with 9/(8*2), or 9/16

It was always easier for me to cancel out when I was a kid, because "finding the least common denominator" to me would be used in the addition or subtraction of fractions, but I follow what you are saying by reducing the fraction first.

I don't mean to be rude. But this shit proves the dumbing down
of American students.

These problems would have been a piece of cake to *any*
high school graduate 20-30 years ago.

My grandmother's high school math text books are harder than
most 1st and 2nd year college math courses nowadays.

These problems should be a piece of cake for any 8th grader.
