I graduated last december... With a major in communications/ business minor.. I have been applying for customer service or sales... I never even get a call back... and when I get an interview they tell me I don't have the 3-5 years experience, they are looking for?? I am at the point right now where I am so frustrated... I even went to a restaurant and the guy was hesitant to hire me because he knew if I landed a job I would leave,,,,, Any suggestions??

gutter if you need a side job to pay bills while you wait, don't put on the app your college education. my roommate got fukkin' rejected by walmart and was better off saying he was an ex-heroin addict or some shitt. big no no. just tell them you did HS or maybe 1 year of college

The old "over qualified" bs. Hang in there Gutter ... I got the old "but you don't have 2+ years of experience" lines after college too. Once you get your foot in the door and prove yourself you'll be fine.

Just hang in there and stay confident -- it's all part of the game sir.

One thing is to take any job available, even stupid stuff, just as long as it doesn't get in the way of the time you need to interview. Even a 20-hour gig at a restaurant seems to make you much more employable. Maybe they sense desperation in you and that is working against you. I know dumb things, but I have gotten a ton of friends into good jobs by first getting them into bad jobs. The best attitude to have with hiring managers these days seems to be "what can you offer me?" instead of "what can I offer to you?".

Excellent point Bill, I respect the interviews where a guy is washing cars to feed his family more than the self-righteous boys hiding behind their degree....life experience and the street are great teachers.

Glaken,
Include thing that would "set you apart" .. small stuff can make all the difference. Tell them of a new idea that your company implemented ... anything that can give you a tiny edge is worth it.

Honestly dump the leadership and references section. Those are rarely seen these days and add no value. Use the space to beef up your job descriptions, which seem a bit simplistic, for example:

I started as an intern, then I was hired by the station. I sold commercial spaces to various businesses in the area.

Turn it into:

After starting out as an intern, I worked my way up into a full sales position. My primary duty was to work in building partnerships with local businesses to build their sales by implementing new advertising campaigns. In the space of xx months I was able to generate $x.

Make it sound more involved instead of sticking to such a factual basis. Positive data points and evidence of advancement are the things that hiring managers try to decipher from stacks of resumes they receive.
