GUERRERO EVEN MONEY TO GET ZIGGY 09/14/03 - Stephen Nover
Lisa Guerrero is so bad as sideline reporter on Monday Night Football that ABC should just use an inflatable doll and save the expense.
Compared to Guerrero, Jill Arrington is Condoleezza Rice. Unless Guerrero starts drastically improving, there's no way ABC can keep her in this role next year. Or is there?
Oddsmakers at BoDog sports book in Costa Rica don't think so. They've posted a 'prop' on whether Guerrero will be the Monday Night Football sideline reporter for the first week of the 2004 season. "No" is currently the favorite at minus $1.40, with "Yes" at even money.
"There has just been a slight lean to the 'Yes', she will return next year," said Rob Gillespie, president of BoDog. "We don't expect a lot of action on this kind of 'prop' because it’s tough to handicap and your money is tied up for a year. The limit on this ‘prop’ is just $100 because insiders could know the outcome."
Guerrero's lack of football knowledge became evident during the New York Jets-Washington Redskins season-opening game when she thought Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey had been teammates with Laveranues Coles before this season. Her utter reliance on prepared notes and inability to ask good questions is frustrating for some viewers.
However, others don't care because Guerrero is so beautiful. But does beauty give her a pass to ruin the credibility of serious female journalists.
Those who don't mind Guerrero's flubs and superficial reporting argue that the Monday night game is as much about entertainment as football, and that sideline reporters don't add much anyway. As bad as Guerrero is, she still hasn't reached the surrealistic level of Eric Dickerson, who couldn't even speak the English language.
"... It (betting) is about entertainment and that is exactly what we are offering with this kind of 'prop,'" Gillespie said. "It's meant to be fun and give our players something to talk about during commercials.
"If bettors are going to talk about it, they are going to form an opinion. If they are going to form an opinion, why not let them bet on it?"
BoDog also has put up odds on the first new network TV show to get cancelled, with Whoopi installed at 8/1.
"Whoopi has been getting the money so far," Gillespie said.
Luis and Hope and Faith are next at 10/1, followed by Married to the Kellys, The Handler, The Ortegas and Threat Matrix, all at 12/1.
Cold Case, It's All Relative, Coupling, Joan of Arcadia, Navy CIS, Happy Family and 10-8 are all 15/1.
Arrested Development and Tru Calling are 18/1, followed by Stan Hooper and Miss Match at 20/1
