Don't know if it was just the off going but the race was one of the most un-contentious Derbys I've ever witnessed. Lion Heart and Smarty Jones appeared a class above. A few newcomers enter the picture, IMO nothing special. I see Jones winning the Preakness. His pedigree leaves doubts as to whether he can go the Belmont distance of a mile and a half. But he had no trouble getting the mile and a quarter Derby. A Pennsylvania-bred triple crown winner? Stranger things have happened.

I forget the name but some h orse ran away in the 2 yr olds I think and everyone was talkijng super horse and one of the casinos in Vegas offered a bet that the horse would win the derby. I couldnt wait and bet the Max on the field. Believe horse finised 5 in derby. There are a bunch of horse people that can tell you who the horse was.

Smarty Jones looked fit and ready after another hard 1½-mile run with exercise rider Pete van Trump aboard. ''He was full of run,'' said trainer John Servis, who wore a Philadelphia Flyers jersey on the track. Smarty Jones had walked and galloped this week on private runs on the closed track. The track was again closed for any horse not named Smarty, only this time the park, which is normally deserted on a Saturday morning, was stuffed with fans who gobbled free doughnuts and coffee.
While Smarty Jones has been the main event at Philadelphia Park, he will have local company at the Preakness. Trainer Martin Ciresa said he would run Little Matth Man, who is stabled 11 barns down from Smarty. ''I've been rooting for Smarty Jones,'' Ciresa said. ''He has to improve a lot to beat Smarty Jones. Smarty's a freak.''

You gotta love Smarty Jones. What a great horse. He is able to summon tremendous speed at will. I've watched replays of a number of his races. He always paces off the leader's right side until the stretch, then turns it on and blows right by the lead horse into the wire. Can't see him losing the Preakness.

BALTIMORE (AP) Imperialism will make another run at Smarty Jones in Saturday's Preakness as part of a prospective 10-horse field that includes the top three finishers in the Kentucky Derby.
Imperialism, who took third behind winner Smarty Jones and Lion Heart, enjoyed a spirited gallop Monday in California and is expected to arrive at Pimlico Race Course on Tuesday.
Steve Taub, owner of the Kentucky-bred colt, initially planned to skip the Preakness and focus on the Belmont on June 5. But Taub changed his mind, opting to challenge unbeaten Smarty Jones and eight other horses in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.
Imperialism closed with a flourish at Churchill Downs and appeared in excellent health Monday.
''He was taken to the gate for training at Hollywood and then galloped 1½ times around the oval,'' Taub said. ''His feet were dancing in the air when he got back to the stall.''
Trained by 21-year-old conditioner Kristen Mulhall, Imperialism won the San Rafael and San Vincente, then placed second in the Santa Anita Derby when Rock Hard Ten (who's also in the Preakness) was disqualified to third.
That was followed by an encouraging run in the slop at Churchill Downs.
During an otherwise quiet day at Pimlico, Nick Zito carried on a tradition that's become as much a part of the Preakness as Black-eyed Susans: bringing his horses to the stakes barn ahead of the other entrants.
The Cliff's Edge and Sir Shackleton made themselves at home along with Birdstone, who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby but likely won't run in the Preakness.
In 2001 and 2002, Zito's horses were the first to arrive at Pimlico. The strategy proved sound three years ago, when A P Valentine took second. Two years ago, however, Straight Gin and Crimson Hero finished out of the money.
Zito didn't have a horse in the Preakness last year.
Borrego, Little Matth Man, Eddington and local entry Water Cannon are also slated to run in the Preakness.

I wouldn't take +1.45, the price should be better than that. If he he is less than 8 to 5 at the Preakness, how could you bet him ? The Derby track conditions took the closers out of the race. Young horses just don't take well to having mud kicked in their face. If Lion and Smarty hookup, look for Cliff's Edge to be flying by late.
