Bell was at the end of his deal and would've had to get a new, lucrative extension though, that isn't apples to apples. Gurley has been in the NFL for 4 years now. You get 3-5 years of cost control on Barkley. It's just not the correct comparison.
Pass rushers or top 10-15 CB's don't grow on trees. What if there isn't a Bosa in the draft? A Ramsey? ...So you're saying Barkley over Denzel Ward or Bradley Chubb is a fish move? I guess time will tell? ...Doesn't seem awful to me.
The point is I'd rather take a RB that I think is close to a sure thing and is perfect for the direction the game is going rather than gamble on a QB that I'm not enamored with.
Barkley got over $30mm guaranteed and is paid among the top 10 at his position. Maybe he transcends the position but there are a lot of 2nd and 3rd round guys who are pretty good making a whole lot less. I think Gurley was the best rb prospect since AD. Neither by themselves are able to transcend an offense. Question should be how many points is Barkley worth vs a top 10 qb? Which rookie contract offers you more flexibility? Of course you could follow the Jaguars model draft a rb in the 2nd round, sign a guy for $32mm, and take one 4th overall lol. We've already kind of seen the rb devaluation trending in the opposite direction so who knows.
