I also was wondering why PU as GOY.
ND has faced following defenses:
Mich #24 W
@MSU #58 W
@BYU #79 L
Was #84 W
PU faced:
Syr #73
BSU #89
Ill #97
ND's opponents total off. rankings:
MSU #53
Was #59
BYU #95
Mich #96
PU's opp off ranks:
Ill #23
BSU #112
Syr #111
PU's ranked #2 in pass off 356 y/g with 14td/0 int and #1 in pass efficiecy 190.9.
ND is #40 with 231y/g, 8/5 and pass eff #55/127.4
Both rush def are about equal with ND at #17 88.8y/g and 2.6 ypc
PU #25 95.3 y/g and 2.8 ypc.
ND pass D #77 225y/g with 2TD/6int pass eff D #18 98.9
PU " " #29 165y/g with 4td/2int " " " #68 125.4
I can't help stop thinking that ND has faced a much stronger schedule so far and PU's numbers are padded by the weak opponents. The lack of Int's by PU in blowout games is bothersome as well. I would think their opponents would be throwing a lot more giving PU's def more chances for the INT. The pass eff D numbers are strongly in ND's favor.
A few more stats to consider:
ND has face teams with an avg Off rush of #75 118 y/g, pass #52 223y/g and pass eff rating of 106.5. PU has faced an avg rush #67 145y/g, pass #80 173y/g and pass eff of 119.5.
ND's opponents avg D rankings are: rush#56 140.9y/g, pass #63 215y/g, and #61 pass eff D of 121.9. Pu's opponent avg is rush #78 171y/g, pass #84.6 243 y/g and pass eff D of 144.5. ALL clearly in ND's favor.
Adding playing at ND and PU losing 8 def starters from last year and playing in what has now become their first big road game...POY is scary. After playing BYU , I also thought PU would be a Boiler blowout as well. Maybe I'm falling into a ND trap here, but I was surprised to see PU open as only a 1-1' pt fav. The stats sure point to a ND win. I personally am not playing this game as I believe this is ND's defining game. This is the first explosive off. they will have played this year. So far ND has faced Bowl opponents that are not as strong as last yr..as a matter of fact, each opponent this yr is not as strong as last year and ND is better than last year. Ty Will says he has HIS players in place for the BS West Coast off. he so dearly loves.
Anyway, GL on the pick. I'm playing the over on 6 Sam Adams for the game.
