This is almost so sad that it's funny. Whenever the US President officially meets a president/prime minister from another country for the first time, it's been tradition to exchange gifts. Check out what Gordon Brown (the UK prime minister) got for Obama:

Gordon Brown gave Barack Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet - once called HMS President.

Mr Brown also took to Washington a framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to mark Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.

He also gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.

What did Obama get him in return? 25 DVDs. Something any of us could have bought on amazon.com. I wonder what's in store for the next exchange...a gift certificate to TGI Fridays, good only mid-week?

Is this earth-shattering news? No. But it came after Obama supposedly blew off appearing at a press conference with Brown. What's really amusing is the British media was all over Obama's jock before the election, but now they feel insulted and disrespected. Gee, I thought everyone said the whole world would love us again after Obama got elected...

Wow...you know what?

These DVDs were purchased here and in all likelihood encoded to play on American machines. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't European DVD players have a different format than American, which means this "gift" is basically useless plastic to Gordon Brown? Nice.

The only thing that would change my mind on this is if these were porn DVDs...because that would be a hell of a gift. Otherwise, Obama just gave Brown something that won't work for him anyway...

in no way does snubbing the leader of your nation's best friend show his lack of experience.

woo, wait, i think 3peet took over my hands for a second

hopefully the dvd's were at least decent choices, like season one of Sleeper Cell. i'm sure the leader of England has a lot of free time to toss in the 'ol movie here and there

They have identified 3 of the DVDs thus far:

The Daily Mail, however, reported the movie set included ET, Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz and was produced by the American Film Institute on "special request" from the White House.

Obama's Blockbuster Gift for Brown: 25 DVDs

Let's hope he's a Star Wars fan.
President Obama on Thursday gave British Prime Minister Gordon Brown a set of 25 classic American movies to mark his historic visit to the White House.
Brown, the first European leader to visit Obama since his Jan. 20 inauguration, was presented with a "special collector's box" of DVDs during his two-day visit to Washington.
Downing Street, which reportedly tried to keep the present a secret, declined to say what movies were included in the set.
"One reason for the secrecy might be that the gift seems markedly less generous and thoughtful than the presents taken to Washington by the Prime Minister," London's Evening Standard newspaper reported.
The Daily Mail, however, reported the movie set included ET, Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz and was produced by the American Film Institute on "special request" from the White House.
Brown, who is not known to be a movie buff, gave the president and his children several uniquely historical gifts.
The first of which is a pen holder fashioned from the oak timber of HMS Gannet, a Navy vessel that served on anti-slavery missions off Africa.
Another treasure given to Obama is a framed commissioning paper for the HMS Resolute, a Royal Navy ship that came to symbolize British-American goodwill when it was rescued by the U.S. from icebergs and given to Queen Victoria. It is the sister ship of the HMS Gannet.
Finally, Brown gave Obama a first edition of Martin Gilbert's seven-volume biography of Winston Churchill, whose World War II partnership with President Franklin Roosevelt symbolized the U.S.-Anglo alliance.

Merged the two threads discussing Obama's friendly gift to Gordon Brown of several hundred dollars worth of DVDs rather than some porcelain statue that would gather dust in some corner of 10 Downing St
