Obama on Tuesday planned to announce the first-ever national emissions limits for vehicles, as well as require an overall or industry average fuel efficiency standard at 35.5 miles per gallon.

That's all fine and dandy if you're living in fantasyland...except in real life, the problem is not everyone can drive a car which gets 35.5 mpg. Think about construction foremen, landscaping services, bricklayers, carpenters and countless other professions which require cars that can haul heavy equipment to their job site. What, are all those guys supposed to start storing all their shit in those Smart Fortwo Coupe Pures that look like little lemons rolling down the freeway?

Yeah, because the only piece missing from Ford's "F150 that gets 35.5 mpg" puzzle for all these years has been a government mandate.

Just more needless government interference that'll add more layers of useless red tape to the government. Stay the fuck out of our lives, already.

Big fucking deal. All my cars get that kind of mileage right now. But of course they’re also foreign made.

The industry average creates a fairly easy compliance for FORD (per the above example offered by JD). By having three vehicles getting 40 mpg for every Ford F150 that only gets 20mpg, they meet the 35mpg average

Vehicles used for commercial purposes are usually exempt and/or categorized separately from passenger vehicles when such legislation has been enacted in past years. It remains to be seen how they might word future legislation in this vein.

"I do not want to run car companies. " B.H.O

.. just pick their CEOs, "negotiate" the terms of their bankruptcies (while ignoring all bankruptcy laws),
select which alternative energy models to prop up through government contracts,
use taxpayer money to buy interests in the companies and then hand them to the unions,

and establish mileage standards...

Only thing is won't be any car makers left to follow these laws in the USA when this becomes law.

Volkswagen has several models that get around 45 miles to a gallon.

In the meantime we have no company in the US that knows how to build a small diesel engine suitable for automotive use.

And the conservatives will continue to blame labor.

A-fing-MEN!!! In addition, when an American car maker can stand behind their car with a 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty I'll give em a look. Until then, I'm quite happy with my foreign car.
