i didn't vote for him, but i think he's becoming a conservative. i love the fact that he emulates lincoln, fdr, and jfk. to learn from great patriots in history, and to take the same "whistle stop" train ride that lincoln took is cool with me. also he is using lincoln's philosophy that one should embrace rivals, because they make you stronger. gates (a bush guy) and hillary come to mind. is not the definition of conservativism looking to the past to help shape the future? if he orders a surge in afganistan and brings in bin laden and zahawi (is that how you spell it?) i'll be impressed.

if barry obama brought bin laden in, he'd shake his hand and then offer him a warm caffe latte. the media would stroke obama. if bush brought bin laden in, he'd chain him up and smack him across the face with a louisville slugger like a real american should

his policies will nearly mirror the socialist we've come to name just FDR. His policies failed, as will Obama's, until we enter the next "great one", WWIII

Riddle me this first Punter:

When was the last time we actually had true fiscal conservative legislation?

Harding comes to mind along with that string of Republicans ending with Hoover. Hoover was actually better than some of his predecessors. But the years of catering to the rich and their greed ended in the collapse and it landed on Herbert.

Jackson was the only one to make the nation totally debt free but the social cost were enormous and the paybacks were long lasting.

Although it was done more to settle a personal score with a political rival more then anything. A true Republican would give every person as much or most of his taxes back. If that is catering to the rich, then i think your foolish to not see the true freedom behind such an act. Now, if you are talking back room dealing and lobbyists and the like and no bid contracts etc etc, then i agree. The reality is the income gap is real. Its getting worse and i know this to be true. But government intervening will not make this situation better. Corporations are running the government puppet show, so asking government to make things better is futile when big business will just find an alternative way of getting it back, usually passing costs onto the consumers. This scenario that some many people are into "change" is like the scene in the movies when you run from the killer, into the arms of one of your friends only to find out that the friend is working for or with the killer. I think im going with scream here, but you get the point. Government is a necessary evil and nothing will change that. Not all the bumper stickers in the land. Not all the kool aid in the nation. Not all the money in the union.

Necessary is key there. Most of you paulstinians (shades of Joe C) want to return to a idyllic time when the economy was agrarian. I dont think it will work now but what we have is not working. All these departments, just more chances for the rich and powerful to bribe and get control.

It is going to be interesting how the Russians and the Chinese handle their problems.

Real simple. Get rid of the FED and let the government control and regulate its own currency and finances. What is so "idyllic" about that? Nobody is pounding their chest for a gold standard here, just a some logical sound money. I will say this Punter.... you continue to pay interest on treasuries to pay for all this madness, you will not only have massive inflation but your going to have insurmountable debts to boot.

I know very little about economics but in my opinion it puts me in the same boat with most the economist.

I made straight "A's" in economy in college but only because I took the time to meet the professor and find out what rang his chimes then you know what answers they want. Not that I ever thought that they were totaly right.

Which conservative policys have been a complete success?

his policies dragged out the global depression longer and since it lasted so long it gave guys like hitler more time to play financial funny games to create his nazi empire and fuck with the jews

taxing like a motherfucker and trying to price fix and intervene in the economy big time to fight the deflation dragged it out longer.....

and gave us many things like social security ponzi scheme, the SEC which supposedly allowed madoff to not make a trade since 1960 and other shite

luckily it doesn't look like obama gonna increase taxes to the moon like FDR did....at least not yet....

plus since FDR was so tax heavy and anti free markets you had guy like henry ford that were supporting guys like hitler in the early days......there was quite a large fascist supporting jew hating contingent that built up in america during the great depression.....at least in the early days before the holocaust and all that came to light......

that'll be the key for obama and company here IMO

i know they will save their fiat ponzi scheme cause they like it

but we'll see if they fuck up in other arenas like FDR dragging it out longer allowing the pain to stay for a long long time globally allowing hitler type regimes to pop up.....leading to WW3 and such....

well obviously its pure speculation what would have happened

if FDR didn't do this or that.....

but its pretty clear from history that FDR policies were a complete failure in bringing an end to the depression

you say we were better off under FDR but we were so bad off coming in we really couldn't get any worse...

hoover (in current day DUBYA) obviously was huge failure too obviously....

he was a big time protectionist and taxer as well.....

and alot of the problems came before FDR

its hard to say what would happened obviously

but looking back on it there was massive mistakes made both prior and during the last great depression

this time there were obviously massive mistakes prior to this banking crises and all the other bubble creation, debt creation etc....

lets just hope we don't make huge mistakes as it implodes as well....

In my mind the chain of pro business low tax republicans prior to 1930 caused the problem. What the fiscal conservatives never allow for is the ingenuity and greed that some people have in a methods of applying it to seize power and twist it to their personal gain at the cost of the general population.

The same ultra fiscal conservative attitudes linked with the robber barons having too much influence on government brought the previous depression in the 1890's.

The government must look out for the people. The powerful can take care of themselves and will take control when the political winds are in their favor.

banking and credit is the root of that problem though punter

just like today

during GD I they fixed gold prices and created massive amounts of bad credit and debt to create bubbles that will eventually burst at which point the debt implodes in a deflationary way since nobody can pay it off as the whole economy implodes

as for "government looking out for the people"

FDR was looking out for 2 things first just like today.....the federal reserve and the banking system at large.....the plight of people were secondary....

moving back as far as 1890s starts to get a bit silly and pointless

our economy a completely different beast today

its well developed and well diversified

3rd world countries today go though all kinds of booms and busts they tend to "naturally" act that way....
