Obama: 'I screwed up' on Daschle appointment

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday admitted he made a mistake in handling the nomination of Tom Daschle as his Health and Human Services secretary, saying Daschle's tax problems sent a message that the politically powerful are treated differently than average people.

President Barack Obama is interviewed by CNN's Anderson Cooper on Tuesday.

Daschle, the former Democratic leader in the U.S. Senate, withdrew earlier Tuesday as news that he failed to pay some taxes in the past continued to stir opposition on Capitol Hill.

"I think I screwed up," Obama said in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. "And, I take responsibility for it and we're going to make sure we fix it so it doesn't happen again."

Daschle had apologized Monday for what he said were honest mistakes, calling them an embarrassment.

The series of errors included improperly reporting $15,000 in charitable donations, failing to list $80,000 in lobbying income due to what Daschle said was a paperwork error and not reporting a car and driver loaned to him by a friend and business associate as income. Watch the president admit his mistake »

Daschle recently filed amended tax returns, and paid more than $140,000 in back taxes and interest for 2005-2007.

Those tax issues, as well as questions over whether work he did after his stint in the senate amounted to lobbying, gave critics ammunition to question Obama's call for a culture change in Washington.

"Ultimately, I campaigned on changing Washington and bottom-up politics," Obama said.

"And I don't want to send a message to the American people that there are two sets of standards -- one for powerful people and one for ordinary folks who are working every day and paying their taxes."

It takes a big man to admit to a mistake especially in public but when does he start doing the same about his spending package?

That's too big for him to admit that he's wrong. Besides, he has too much pressure to spend the way he suggests. It's not just a matter of what his opinion is. He is beholden to other people on what he suggests.

Well, at least we received a "I made a mistake" from this President after less than two weeks.

We never received one from the last President until sometime in his seventh year and then it was fobbed off with a variety of excuses.

Desperation and bleeding? LMAO, talk about dilusional. What exactly did your president do when shit hit the fan month after month? Come up with some idiotic quips? Tuck his cock? Throw his press secretaries out there to start spin? OH! I know...He'd head off to Camp David to take his pooch for a walk.

This president had problems with his appointee's due to tax issues. Tax issues people! MJ you wouldn't understand these problems because you recieve a W-2 as a Walmart greeter. You file a simple 1040ez and your days done. You wouldn't understand the concept of a 1099, complicated tax laws and the endless benefits of a tax attorney. You know what the Bush administration woulda done had that happened to any of his guys? Bury the story and pay people to shut up.

Bar I have to posit that to be on the ballot for KOY a poster must be a 9/11 "truther." It's just too high up on the list of Kookery to be ignored. On that MJ is disqualified. You may disagree with his views but he is not insane, like Random for instance.

Little Tommy Daschle who while senator never saw a tax hike he didn't vote for or like.Didn't pay his own.
I see why democrats like raising taxes. They don't pay taxes themselves.

That’s because Bush didn’t make any mistakes in 7 years. Lets do the math, 7 years - 2 weeks. BO better hope for a change. :tongue2:

one of the biggest, mud-slingingest issues between maccain and obama was about who had the better judgment. well, here we are, 2 weeks in and obama going on all the major networks saying that he showed a lack of judgment, that he screwed up. is this the change we wanted and find refreshing, the leader of the free world showing his own lack of experience and judgment? a big argument ensued around the campagin message of joe biden "the presidency does not lend itself to on-the-job training". those were biden's words then and obam's words now. obama better hurry up and get ahold of things and be a real leader. if not, the presidency is going to become irrelevant because once you lose them it's nearly impossible to get 'em back. leadership like this shows weakness to our enemies as well.
