owner doesnt give a shit about winning.

trades his best players every year.

was watching twins game the other day, stadium had like 5,000 people in it.

no reason to support, follow the team.

miguel tejada, dan haren, rich harden, holliday, giambi(in his prime), on and on and on and on.

this plagues MLB. essentially a 1/4 of the teams are minor league teams for the top 10 teams in the league.

teams like the a's and pirates trade there best players and the top teams give them prospects.

when those prospects develop and are good they trade those prospects who are now studs to the top 10 market teams again for prospects.

rinse and repeat.

there essentially a major league developmental team for major market baseball teams.

A's compete. Pirates don't. A's have some of the best management and front office people in baseball. Owner just won't pay em to stay.

When the Hass family owned the team they developed, competed and signed.Hell Jose,Rickey,Mac,Stienbach they signed those guys.

Sandy Alderson when was first hired by the Hass's was the first thing he said was build the farm system and his model is still in tact,I guess.

The family sold to a group and you know how "The Group" sales always go.

But talk about the most pathetic,go across the bay to that bitch ass sister of Eddie D's and you want to talk pathetic.

2 of the 5 weren't their players to begin with. So take out Holliday and Haren and add Neal Cotts.

the a's play the hand they are dealt. they have in the past, been very competitive. if you look at the guys they got rid of, you wouldn't want to be stuck w/those contracts. some of them haven't been worth a damm; zito, mulder, and in a sense, giambi. time will tell, to see how this all works out. the a's seemed to get the player they wanted from stl. the one guy the a's signed, didn't work at all, eric chavez. bet bean hates that; being burned for a big contract. at least the a's roll the dice. the pirates; 30 yrs of ineptitude. can't even ever contend

Holliday is a F/A after this season. No way he was staying, so you get something for him.

The OP's analysis was not unreasonable, though it's overly stiff towards the Oakland As

And I submit that MLB does not need to contract...having the half dozen Won'tCompetes does serve as a quasi-AAAA level development tier.

The key is that those half dozen need to stay in separate divisions so as to spread the AssKicking love fairly to the remaining 24

Baltimore, KC, Was, Pit and to a lesser degree Oak and SD

Rays spent a good half dozen years (after their first four "beginner" seasons) being slobs, but thankfully new ownership has really made a sincere effort in past 3 years to shape them into a contender.

L5Y, USC is 4-0 vs SEC, outscoring them 167-48!!!

Easy there buddy. Its a rebuilding period for the A's these past 2 years. Wasn't long ago my team was competing annually in the post season for a stretch of 6-7 years. And given our pathetic payroll, I'll still take GM Beane over anyone in the league without question.

btw, read "Money Ball" It'll explain why the A's do what they do. It's actually quite impressive when you think about it.

I agree about the contraction. MLB needs it badly.

I don't even know why people go to games in Pitt, KC, OAK, SD and a few other places. Players are playing not to win, but collect a check. It really isn't their fault as the market does not allow owners to spend the money.

Also, any ownership group that does not have another business like the Browns (Cincy Bengals), Bidwells (az Cards), they are always reluctant to spend money on salaries and are strictly in it for the profit.

Guys like Cuban have other profitable ventures that allow him to throw money in baseball.

MLB needs a salary cap plain and simple

I can not agree with you more, Rob

I am an old school baseball fan. A team should develop their team through the minors leagues.

Back when baseball was the National Pastime teams did not just pick up players to fill their needs like the Skankees. They brought them up through the Minor League. It is too bad that the teams that spend the most money on payroll make the playoffs.

I hate to say it, but Major League Baseball has become a complete joke.
