Yeah, real ghetto fabulous..hehe. NW part where Kiss is talking about is solidly upper middle class, with most of it only 10 years old or less. Only bad parts of Vegas are close into the Strip and Downtown with some modestly bad parts in old Henderson and near Boulder Hwy. If you are 10 miles from the Strip you are pretty likely in an area is newer and is fairly safe, although the unfortunate truth is all of Vegas isn't all that safe compared to suburbia in most other cities. I am sure a lot of people heard about Doyle Brunson getting armed attackers and he lives in about the nicest part of town. Vegas is a city where lots of people have cash and negotiable stuff on hand and the criminals will go wherever it is to get it.

North LV isn't all bad either, just the closest parts to downtown are very ghetto. The northern fringes include some very nice master plan areas with nice views, at some of the most reasonable prices left in the Valley. Used to be misery to get up there, but with the Beltway now connecting it to the 15 and 95 it isn't so bad.

Funny story .......about 6-7 years ago, 2 friends and I took a road trip from Texas to San Diego, LA, and Las Vegas ...for 2-3 days each ......we got to Vegas and didn't have a place to stay....It was their first time to go there .....we finally found a room a few blocks east of downtown ...in a dump....green shag carpet ...they said the water would be back on later (lol) .....I had to walk to one of the casinos to brush my teeth.....I remember walking through there ....seeing many shady characters .....lucky we didn't get capped or something ......the next day we went down to the luxurious Super 8 behind Bally's.

Fellas, just got back from Vegas about a month ago. My buddy and i stayed at the Strat. I thought the place and area around it were not the best. Do you all have any advice to me the next time i go to Vegas? I like the Strip, but i am open to any suggestions. I guess i didnt know about all the crime their in Vegas. I must be blind to it. I always use the theory--If you are looking for trouble you can find it. If you arent it wont find you no matter where you are at. Plain and simple. You all agree? Take care.

Truth is there isn't much crime if you just walk towards the Sahara from the Strat. That little corridor always has people and cops around. It is the area behind it and to the north that you want to avoid. I think worst part of Strat is the distance to everything. If you are staying there get a car or take the bus and you aren't likely to have problems. Sucks when you have to walk a mile and for all your trouble all you get is the Riv or the Circus Circus.

Few comments...

mightyvol, I agree with your philosophy...not airtight obviously (there are no guarantees in life), but true most of the time.

el diablo...pretty sad when Super 8 is considered an upgrade, huh? Glad you survived, and have a fun story to show for it.

Stratosphere is not North Las Vegas...it is the north end of the Strip. North Las Vegas is north of downtown (bad area) and spreads pretty far north (good area). My home address is North Las Vegas. I'm in a good area, but some bad areas are just a few miles away. Northwest is the newer area as the urban spread continues toward the mountains surrounding Vegas.

kiss1...definitely want to have a meeting of the Northwest Las Vegas chapter of the RX. This week might be tough as I'm swamped with Derby stuff...perhaps we should just pencil in next Wednesday night (May 5)...that should be a solid NBA night with good second-round matchups. Best option would probably be Santa Fe since it's right off highway in case others from other part of town want to make the trek. But I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Sounds fine to me. I remember a couple of other LV peeps that chimed in last time ?

This area is nice. Great Mountain and Golf Course view. I think the mall they are always working on off Ann Road will eventually be bigger than the one in Minny ( Mall of America).

Let's pencil in next Wednesday (May 5) at 4 p.m...people can get down on NBA/NHL/MLB action starting on East Coast, or bet before they come...and West Coast racing will be wrapping up...anyone who wants to join us is more than welcome...just show up and wander around the seats that merge the race and sports book and look lost, and it should be pretty apparent who is there meeting people that they don't know what they look like

For people that can't show up until later, I'm sure many of us will hang around through the end of the West Coast games...10 p.m. or so.

How's that sound?

Sounds good. I'll be wearing a red "House of Blues" ballcap. I'm also the size of Jessie Ventura, you won't miss me :)

To whom it may concern...

We haven't followed up on this, but I was still planning to be at the Santa Fe on Wednesday, but my parents are in town and since they're not the type to hang out in a casino (I think I was adopted) it's probably not fair for me to make the wife babysit them all night.

If anyone is still going to be there, post it here and I'll try to drop in at some point...

I put them up at Sante Fe. I'll be there in less than two hours.

Turley gives you the date and time and then does a "no show."

The next time it's "my fault."
