Hey everyone.
I'm completely new to sports betting. I'm a poker player though.
I really want to learn. So I'd really appreciate if someone could help me out with a few questions.

Where to start? are there theory threads or articles explaining what all the numbers mean? like team A is -110 ....what does that mean? or maybe some good books?

Do people really profit from expert picks? And what do their numbers mean? (Expert Dow is on a 27-13 run)...I understand that's their run, but what does 27 stand for and 13?

Ammm....so I hope this wasn't too stupid..:))
and tx for ur time.

Ill try...

Hey everyone.
I'm completely new to sports betting. I'm a poker player though.

Where to start? start with play money, dont invest a dime until your confident you know what u are doing are there theory threads or articles explaining what all the numbers mean? like team A is -110 ....what does that mean? -110 is the amount you stand to lose if the bet doesnt win, you will be wagering 110 to win 100. if the game was -225 you would be risking 225 still to win 100. If it the line was +100 you would risk 100 to win 100, +120 would mean risking 100 to win 120. or maybe some good books?

Do people really profit from expert picks? Not in the long runAnd what do their numbers mean? (Expert Dow is on a 27-13 run)...I understand that's their run, but what does 27 stand for and 13? They have won 27 and loss 13......Lets look at this. they won 27 at -110 for +2700 dollars. They then lost 13 at -110 thats 1430 dollars lost. lets say u paid them 10 dollars per pick, thats 400 dollars in fees. so even though they won twice as many as they lost you only won about 830 dollars on 40 bets.....They cannot ofcourse sustain a 27-13 run and your less than 8 bets ahead .. if on their next 5 bets they go 1-4 you will be +90 for the win giving you 920 - the 4 losses at -120 each (remember its -110 plus their 10 bucks makes it -120 every loss) means your now up only 440 after 45 picks.....
Sportsbetting is a game of close edges. Your never in the long term going to win more than say 55% of your wagers at best.....therefore winning 100 on wins but losing 120 on losses will never be profitable ...You will always be very close to even while your pick salesman annd your bookie win everytime you bet....

Ammm....so I hope this wasn't too stupid..:))

-110 just means 10% juice. Like for every 100 dollars you would have to wager 110 to win it. If it is -120 then it would be 20% juice so you would have to risk 120 to win 100 and so on and so on. The juice is how the books make more money. So if your were to win 10 bets and lose 10 bets you would still be down because of it. The juice is sometimes called the vig.
