This first point is directed at the dumb media. Only a neophyte uses the term assault weapon/rifle. I have yet to come across a weapon that dispenses love and encouragement.

Now to answer the question of why anyone would need a rifle. It has been established the police do not have an obligation to protect any particular individual. Their purpose is for keeping law and order. If you call the police because someone is breaking in and the police go to the wrong address, you have no recourse. Therefore, one can not depend on the police for protection.

How has it worked out so far? I've always believed if you need an assault weapon to protect yourself chances are your an asshole and you shouldn't be allowed to own anything except a slingshot.
