why am i a lions fan anymore?

NEW YORK – The Detroit Lions agreed to terms with Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford on a six-year, $78 million deal that includes an NFL-record $41.7 million guaranteed, sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday. The deal represents the largest amount of guaranteed money for any player – rookie or veteran – in NFL history, exceeding the $41 million guaranteed that defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth received from Washington at the beginning of free agency this offseason.

41 million guaranteed for an unproved player. utter stupidity! at least they arnt going to draft crabtree or maclin

I still think that to give a kid 41.7 million... he has to have done something for me already. What happens if he is the real deal? You gonna give him a paycut? lol.

In all seriousness, I wouldn't shed a tear if the Lions moved to L.A. at this point. Michigan Football will always be here, and as long as we have college football in the surrounding areas I'm ok.

Rich Rod or not, Michigan will be back sooner then later. You can only punch a giant when they're sleeping so many times before they wake up.

That's dumb to pay stafford that much and the fans gotta pay for all these salary inflations. Vince young barely play after first season and he's getting paid 20+ guaranteed.

I'm a Lions fan too, but I really don't blame them this year. They are the fucking Lions so of course they landed the #1 pick on the only year it doesn't fucking matter. It is a year that no player truly stands head and shoulders above the rest. Teams don't want to spend the money the Lions spent when the players aren't looking like studs. With the economy in the state it is in I'm guessing trade offers were slim and grim for the first pick this year.

They could have went Curry, but they still would have spent a ton of money. They need a QB, but is Stafford going to be that? I'm sure as hell glad they didn't go Sanchez. I just hope he showed them enough to warrant that kind of a decision. I actually am trying to have a glimpse of hope now that the Millen Era is over. The best case scenario would have been to trade down in my opinion, but I doubt it was feasible.

This is all coming from someone who usually blows a gasket after watching the Lions draft, but this one pissed me off less than normal. It may just have been because I didn't have to watch Matt Millen, that remains to be seen. I would have preferred going with Maualuga or Laurinaitis with the early second rounder and tried for Dalmas or Rashad Johnson later. Michael Ohr over Pettigrew also could have been a score with the late first rounder.

Oh well, I doubt they are going to start winning anytime soon. We'll see what a year from now brings.
