Incredibly dumb to eliminate this. The success rate on shootouts can't be higher than what, 30%? Why try to knock that down even lower?
I was talking to a buddy of mine who is an NHL nut...his theory is goalies only have to concentrate on the shooter during shootouts, as opposed to in-game breakaways where there are several other moving parts they need to consider like defensemen coming back, another opponent joining the attack, etc. This new rule will eliminate one more thing goalies need to look out for.
