Devils.......
Pavel Zacha and John Quenneville will make their NHL preseason debuts tonight when the Devils open the exhibition schedule against the Boston Bruins in Providence, R.I.

Zacha, the sixth overall pick at this year’s Draft, centered Tuomo Ruutu and pro tryout Lee Stempniak at today’s morning skate.

“It’s a great feeling for me,” Zacha said. “I really enjoyed practice and I’m looking forward to playing Boston."

The veteran wingers have over 1,400 NHL games between them, and Zacha hopes to benefit from their experience tonight.

“It was my first practice with them,” he said. “I know they’re great players. They’ve played in the NHL for a long time. It’s amazing for me to play with them, and I’ll just try to enjoy it and learn from the best from them and just play my best in the game."

Zacha has already gotten advice from fellow Czech native Patrik Elias on how to prepare.

"He told me how to get ready for a game, do the little things,” Zacha said. "Play a two-way game, don’t just focus on scoring goals. He wanted me to play good defense, and if you play good defense we can just score goals after that."

Quenneville, New Jersey’s first-round selection last year, moves from center to left wing on a line with Adam Henrique in the middle and Nick Palmieri at right wing.

“It’s super exciting,” Quenneville said. “It’s something I thought about a lot this summer, hoping that I could get the opportunity to do so. Tonight’s the night. I’m really happy that I got this opportunity and I hope to make the most of it."

Coach John Hynes, a Providence native, is looking for tonight’s group to apply elements from the first two days of training camp.

“One, we want to make sure of work habits. You want to focus on the things we’ve talked to them about. We want to have some strong structure in certain areas of our game that we’ve worked on. We can’t cover everything.

"The second one is, we want to see a team that’s going to play with passion and a lot of purpose in how we want to do things and that’s going to be [play] mentally and physically tough. Those are the components, identity-wise, we’re looking for. Then as coaches, tactically we’ll just look at areas that we’ve addressed with them and see if those things are taking place in the game."

Keith Kinkaid will start and split goaltending duties with Scott Wedgewood.

David Schlemko participated in the morning skate, but did not make the trip. Hynes said he’ll have to make a decision from the seven D that traveled.

Morning lines:

John Quenneville - Adam Henrique - Nick Palmieri

Tuomo Ruutu - Pavel Zacha - Lee Stempniak

Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond - Joseph Blandisi - Matt Lorito

Sergey Kalinin - Jacob Josefson - Paul Thompson

Defensemen: Jon Merrill, Damon Severson, Eric Gelinas, Seth Helgeson, Colton White, Jacob Sweeney

Winnipeg at Edmonton

Most of the players who skated in last night’s game, (Winnipeg), will not play tonight, with the exception of five:

Alex Burmistrov, Thomas Raffl, Joel Armia, Brendan Kichton, and Andrew Copp.

The Jets will face an Edmonton team that has won both pre-season games they’ve played so far. The Oilers will ice a line-up with established veterans such as Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Nail Yakupov, with Ben Scrivens and newly acquired Cam Talbot acting as the goaltending tandem.

But Maurice says exposure to a veteran line-up like Edmonton’s isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the younger Jets players.

“They’ve got some pretty good fire power in their line up coming into the game. We’re going to spend a little bit of time in our end of the ice,” he said. “We’re going to have to read rushes. We’re going to have to do all the things that these young guys have to learn at this level before they can get themselves into the holes of those offensive chances, the top six roles.”

Oilers Forwards vs. Jets:

Pouliot-RNH-Eberle
Yakupov-Lander-Draisaitl
Korpikoski-Letestu-Hendricks
Slepyshev-Yakimov-Christoffer

Defensive Pairings:

Klefbom-Schultz
Reinhart-Gryba
Nurse-Oesterle

Goaltenders:

Talbot
Scrivens

You know I’d rather watch a NHL preseason game over most any other sport, at any point of the year.

I've enjoyed watching the 3 on 3 this season. I wish someone here in Nevada would hang lines, at least no one does that I know of. I think William Hill had the frozen fury game last year but that's it. I would have bet against the Kings last night. How do you make a team a -200 favorite in a preseason hockey game? I would have lost, but still wish I had the option.

I’ve always loved watching 3 on 3. Couldn’t wait for the rule change.

Not enough interest for Vegas to book preseason. Frankly, barely enough to book the regular season. I still think we have a huge advantage in playing these preseason games with such lopsided announced lineups. Polar opposite of the parity we see all year long. Despite the 30 cent lines I think there’s tremendous opportunity there. In years past I’ve funded my regular season account with preseason winnings.

Agree with last night King’s game. Only reason I didn’t play it was because of the two dollar tag.

I’m looking for a big bounce back from the Kings this year Chazz.
