The Belmont on Saturday will do triple these ratings, at a minimum.

And horse racing is a "dead" sport in America...

and it was much more exciting that any game of the NBA finals and probably all the NBA finals combined.

It was. Hockey needs to do a better job marketing or something. Every single person who doesn't follow hockey that I have sat down watched a game with has loved it (once I explained offsides and icing).

It doesn't help that ESPN doesn't give it shit for coverage.

Great game last night. More exciting than the NBA and the refs don't decide who wins the games like in the NBA.

hockey is doing fine. almost 100% capacity all season long at the stadiums in every market. Espn low balled the NHL after the lock out and they went elsewhere. The president of espn recently said that was the biggest mistake they ever made. Too much wrestling or bowling on TV for many americans I guess. They are missing a hell of a sport

Ok.
Do you only like non-niche stuff?
Does a sport have to have a certain rating for you to approve?

Whats that magic number?

If it was a 2.2 would you approve? Or would it have to be at least a 2.6743.9 for it to reach your give a shit threshold.

I honestly think hockey is an exciting sport but if im not betting it doesnt interest me. Probably has to do with the fact no one plays hockey in hawaii.

Warm weather sports can be played in cold weather areas (during summer) but cold weather sports are pretty much never played in warm areas....thats the problem and it isnt hockey's fault

I'm not sure exactly what a "niche" sport is, but if you're suggesting it doesn't have potential for widespread appeal I disagree.

I do agree the fan base is limited, I'm not going to argue with the numbers. Obviously more people watch the NBA than watch the NHL. That was my exact point, it seems like a problem with marketing. I think if it got more play its fan base would grow.

Either way I don't really care, I love the sport, I love betting it, I love watching it, everything about it. If others don't watch it that's their loss. I don't see why I would let the ratings affect my opinion. "Oh it gets relatively low ratings, so it must be shit". Is that supposed to be the attitude one takes? Seems weak-minded.

I don't know why you're bringing this up like it bolsters some argument you've made in the past or something...

I don't care what the rating is because I don't care about the league or the sport to begin with. The rating is a great reference point to use when people try to actually pawn off the idea of the NHL being a major sport in America. Modern Family pulled a 1.6 on ABC last night, almost beating the NHL finals.

First of all that doesn't seem like a common argument that people get into. I mean, who cares? Depends on how you define "major sport" I suppose.

Seems like that rubs you the wrong way when people take that position. Why is that?

Which is fine. Just dont pretend that the NHL is even close to the NBA, which is what many hockey apologists do out of shame that the league is so ignored by the country. I like Taco Johns, I don't pretend that it's close to Taco Bell in terms of popularity though.

The NHL is just like that, Taco Johns. Quiet, obscure, niche product. Has its fan base but its just out there off in its own area. The NHL is that. I just get tired of the diehards actually trying to move the Taco Johns out of the obscure area and putting it on the block next to the Taco Bell, doesn't belong there and will never belong there. Use that analogy with hockey and just let it stay in its own little niche area where it belongs.

So is modern family not a major sitcom in America because it was a 1.6?
