Now you may think I’m still reeling from Thursday’s massacre with today’s selection and that this is a desperate grasp by a desperate man but let me assure you all that I have sound reasoning behind it, my mind is thinking quite clearly, and I would easily pass any drug test.
Pittsburgh Penguins PK +255
I’m not ready to quit on our flightless, feathered, friends yet. They play a home and home against a Buffalo team that is trying to keep their dim playoff light alive. The Sabres have played well lately and with confidence. With six games remaining they trail the eighth place Islanders by eight points. Every game has sudden death meaning to Buffalo. So why take the other side?
Past history….Last time Buffalo beat Pittsburgh at home was two and a half years ago. Since that win on 10/14/01 the Penguins have posted a 7-0-2 record against Buffalo. Going back to 1999 the Penguins have compiled a 17-5-3 overall record versus the Sabres. And they have absolutely dominated them at Buffalo, 10-2-1. For what ever reason the Penguins own the Sabres.
Recent history…The Penguins were an embarrassing team one short month ago. Losers and owners of a record setting eighteen straight games they somehow switched the transmission into drive from reverse. In the last thirteen games they have lost only three. And this record was not created against push overs. They’ve beaten some of the best teams in the league at home and on the road.
Pressure…I know this game is everything for the Sabres but sometimes that do or die motivation accomplishes only tight play, tight collars, and many white knuckles. Buffalo has felt this urgency for the last month and all it got them was a 6-9 record. When the going gets tough sometimes the tough get going.
Value…In lieu of all the above why would you make the Sabres a -285 favorite? Sorry but in my elementary attempt to apply some measure of proportionate mathematical weight of the line to the probability of Pittsburgh winning this game I would have to say the scales are tipped heavily towards the side of our flightless, feathered, friends……..in other words Penguins win! Penguins Win!
