<!-- T11805946 --><!-- Sesame Modified: 05/31/2009 21:10:49 --><!-- sversion: 2 $Updated: ekernish$ -->DETROIT -- Television ratings for Game 1 of the Red Wings-Penguins Stanley Cup Finals rematch were down from last year's levels.
The NBC telecast drew a 2.6 rating and a 5 share. That's compared with a four-game NBC average of a 3.2 rating and a 6 share one year ago.
Detroit beat Pittsburgh 3-1 in Saturday night's Game 1 and won the Cup over the Pens in six games in 2008.
The first Cup finals game on NBC last year -- a Pittsburgh win in Game 3 -- earned a 2.8 national rating.
The rating is the percentage watching a program among homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned into the broadcast among those households with TVs on at the time.

NBA Continues to Dominate U.S. TV Ratings

Baseball is slumping. Hockey doesn’t stand a chance. College and pro football are out of season. Spelling bees, um… yeah.
Not only has bball drawn strong audiences in the Conference Finals, it’s setting all-time viewer records. To give some perspective, Game 4s of the Lakers/Nuggets and Cavs/Magic series out-performed the five network stations in similar time slots. Monday’s Lakers/Nuggets matchup drew 9.88 million viewers and a 6.9 national rating among adults 18-49, annihilating ABC’s The Bachelorette and NBC’s Dateline. Game 4 was easily ESPN’s most-viewed basketball game ever as well as the most viewed game on cable in history.

But the record was short-lived as TNT’s telecast the following night of the Magic’s OT Game 4 win averaged 10.1 million watchers and a 6.3 national rating in the key demos. Chaps, Game 4 was the most-watched show on cable this year! Although reeling from the summer transition, this Game 4’s audience closely rivaled CBS’ encore combination of bona fide hits NCIS and The Mentalist. Not bad at all. Via MultiChannel:

<!-- Similar Posts took 598.798 ms -->NBA fans may or may not get to see Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers meet LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in The Finals, but viewers are certainly tuning in to the conference finals.
After ESPN set a record for most-viewed NBA playoff game in cable history Monday night, TNT donned the crowd Tuesday with its coverage of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals.

For the Playoffs, ESPN is up 16 percent in viewers compared to last season, and TNT is up 20 percent. ESPN’s ratings are up 10 percent, and TNT’s ratings are up 12 percent nationally. The two networks are up in every other key demo imaginable.

As the economy twists itself back in the right direction, people are finding time for escapism — returning to old comforts. Needless to say, when old basketball fans turn on hoops this year, they like what they see. We may not be in the Golden Age anymore, but the NBA certainly has climbed out of its mid-decade Dark Age.

hockey is the worst sport to watch on tv by far, I wish they would put it on some cable network instead of ruining sat/sun nights on local tv, rating are a complete joke

Versus' seven telecasts of the NHL Conference Finals averaged a 1.5 cable rating (1.725 million viewers), up from a 1.2 rating (1.322 million viewers) last year. That marks the highest-rated third round on cable since '98. Versus' coverage of Red Wings-Blackhawks series-clinching Game Five on Wednesday earned a 2.1 cable rating and 2.324 million viewers, up 110% and 127%, respectively, from the comparable 1.0 rating and 1.025 million viewers for the series-clinching Red Wings-Stars Game Six in '08, which aired on a Monday night. The 2.1 rating ranks tied for the highest-rated program ever on Versus with the final stage of Lance Armstrong's last Tour de France win in '05. Red Wings-Blackhawks Game Five also ranks as the fourth-most viewed telecast in net's history (THE DAILY). CABLEFAX DAILY writes Versus "stepped in a few years back when the NHL was on life support" following the '04-05 lockout season, and since has "meaningfully helped the league skate toward resurgence." The net's 75 million subscriber base is "more than ample, and die-hard hockey fans, which dominate the base, increasingly know where to find their beloved sport on cable." Versus' regular-season NHL ratings were up about 20% from the '07-08 season, while ratings for the playoffs are up about 30%. Fein: "The facts speak for themselves" (CABLEFAX DAILY, 5/29). In Boston, Chad Finn writes the Versus-NHL partnership is "not a perfect marriage to be sure," but one that the league "seems content to live with." Whether the NHL "remains on Versus beyond 2011 will depend upon one factor more than any other: money, specifically which network is willing to pay the most in rights fees" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/29).

This same clown came into the hockey forum shouting this propaganda without any facts to back them up a couple weeks and and was eventually banned from the forum.
He has nothing positive to say about the game of hockey.
Something tells me he tried out for a team as a youngster and showed up with 2 left skates and was the 1st one cut from the squad. He seems to have a bitter taste in his mouth ever since. Kinda funny actually.

Part of the low ratings number is due to the fact that Saturday is the lowest Nielsen rated day of the week, less people watch TV on Saturday's than any other day, followed by Friday.
The reason being, most American's don't tune into much TV on weekend nights, it's been that way forever.
Why do you think the networks air repeats of crime dramas and other crap on Saturday nights?

Not saying if game 1 was aired on a Thursday (the most watched TV night of the week) it would have had through the roof ratings, but it would have fared much better.

I would watch hockey over the nba any day of the week. The nba is a joke. Officials call fouls on almost every play. The game used to take 2 hours. Now games take 3 hours. Plus it is disgusting having to look at the animals that play in the nba. Tattoo infested low lifes.

Playoff hockey is a better product than NBA playoffs.
Big problem is it's not marketed properly.

I think with better marketing, MLB's number can improve 15%, easily.

If you read enough of his posts, you'd be hard pressed into believing any woman could put up with his attitude for a very long period of time. My guess would be not his wife that's getting fucked, but a sister or a long time female family friend. Would cause the same type of attitude.
