Hard to top. The Steel Curtain..

In the 1976 season alone, the Pittsburg Steelers' defense was the most dominant, perhaps the best defense of all time. After the Steelers started 1-4 and lost their QB, Terry Bradshaw, the Steel Curtain took over, holding their opponents to a single (thats right one score) touchdown over the next nine games, and shutting the opposition out five times, including three consecutive. During this unprecedented stretch the Steelers allowed an average 3.1 points per game. Eight of the Steelers starting eleven defensive players were selected for the Pro Bowl. Eight out of eleven making the Pro Bowl is freaklike.

Hall of Famers from Steel Curtain:
Mel Blount, Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, - should be in L.C. Greewood.
Honorable mention: Andy Russell, Dwight White, Mike Wagner, Donnie Shell.

"Unofficially" retired numbers from Steel Curtain:
Blount - 47, Shell - 31, Lambert - 58, Ham - 59, Greene - 75.

Finest hour (one game) for the Steel Curtain (subjective - my choice):
January 12, 1975. Opponet NFC Champs Minnesota Vikings, Super Bowl IX..

Pittsburgh wins its first of four Super Bowls in the 1970s.
The Steel Curtain defense holds a very good Vikings offense to just 119 total offensive yards, still a Super Bowl record that stands (32 years later).

The Steelers defense also grabbed three picks and forced two Viking fumbles for a record five Super Bowl turnovers recovered.

Pittsburgh wins their first Super Bowl 16-6, missing the shutout on a blocked Steeler punt covered by Minnesota for a TD.

Over the years there have been a lot of great defenses all mentioned in this thread probably. One thing about the Steel Curtain in 1975 is if they had a team say 3rd and 8 at midfield you knew a punt was coming. Even with the great D's over the years fans still had to sweat out the play but IMO not with this team, they just didn't give up third and longs (save gifts by the zebras to the opposing offense).

Just think what might have been if Glanville and the Atl. management did not trade Favre.
