[h=1]Bills trade Cardale Jones to Chargers for draft pick.[/h]
DFsuIuOXgAAThbm.jpg

Chargers coach Anthony Lynn is reuniting with one of his favorite quarterback prospects.
The Bills have traded Cardale Jones to the Chargers in exchange for a conditional draft pick, Buffalo announced Wednesday.
Jones' staunchest supporters left Western New York when Lynn departed for Los Angeles and general manager Doug Whaley lost his job in late April.
Buffalo proceeded to sign journeyman T.J. Yates and draft Nathan Peterman, leaving Jones as the odd man out of the quarterback rotation.
It's no surprise that the former Ohio State star is headed to Southern California. Although Jones struggled in offseason practices as a rookie, he made quite an impression on Lynn, the Bills' 2016 offensive coordinator-turned-interim head coach.
"He's picked up the offense well," Lynn told the Buffalo News last December. "He's in meetings with all the other quarterbacks. He comes early. He leaves late. I've been very satisfied with his work ethic.
"It's hard, you know, without seeing a guy in a game. But you watch him in practice. You watch him in individual drills. You watch his footwork and his arm strength. He's what you want waiting on the runway."
While Jones boasts all of the physical tools to succeed in the NFL, he remains a developmental prospect with just 11 regular-season passes under his belt. After the Bolts worked out Robert Griffin III on Tuesday, however, it's fair to wonder if Lynn is seeking competition for No. 2 quarterback Kellen Clemens.
Jones figures to battle Clemens and second-year signal-caller Mike Bercovici for the opportunity to wait on the Chargers' runway this season.

Jets claim wideout Lucky Whitehead off waivers.

DFsCscVW0AAxUuH.jpg

Lucky Whitehead's wild week will end in New York.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the New York Jets claimed the receiver from waivers. The team later made the announcement official.
The Dallas Cowboys cut Whitehead this week following an initial report that the 25-year-old was accused of petty larceny.
It turns out police identified the wrong man.
Prince William County Police confirmed on Tuesday that the man accused of larceny did not have identification, but provided the name, date of birth, and social security number matching that of Rodney Darnell Whitehead Jr. It was not, however, receiver Lucky Whitehead -- who was not in the area at the time of the incident.
The Cowboys went through with waiving Whitehead despite the police retraction.
In New York, Whitehead is an improvement on kick returns over incumbent Jalin Marshall, who is suspended the first four games of the season. Whitehead had just nine career receptions in two seasons with the Cowboys, but could also battle for playing time in a green Jets receiving corps.
Whitehead now finds himself in a better situation to make an opening day roster in New York than he did in Dallas.

Joe Flacco (back) preparing to miss 3-6 weeks.

DFs_A8NXgAA3yDp.jpg

Ravens camp will begin without the team's quarterback. Joe Flacco will miss the first week of Baltimore's camp and is preparing to miss three to six weeks with a disc issue in his back, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported, per sources informed of the situation.
Flacco becomes the latest casualty in an offseason that has seen plenty of personnel losses -- cornerback Tavon Young, tight end Dennis Pitta, who has since been released, and tight end Darren Waller, who was lost to a season-long suspension -- with this being the second in as many days. Running back Kenneth Dixon's season ended before it began on Tuesday when he was placed on injured reserve. A day later, the man handing him the ball has been sidelined.
The bright side, though, is that the team is not concerned about Flacco's availability once the regular season arrives, Rapoport reported. The six week maximum timeframe, as it would stand now, has Flacco returning to the field for preparation before Baltimore's Week 1 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Back injuries can be trickier and more delicate than most. One hit in the wrong area or at the wrong angle can send weeks of progress in the opposite direction. It makes sense, then, that Baltimore is exiling the quarterback to the trainer's room early, instead of pushing him at the start of a long camp.
Ryan Mallett is the next man up at quarterback for Baltimore and is expected to get the first-team reps for most of training camp. Mallett was in the running for the starting job in Houston two seasons ago before he quickly fell out of favor with coach Bill O'Brien, and ended up with Baltimore after getting cut by the Texans. Mallett still possesses a big arm and said he learned from his immature mistakes in Houston, but has seen very little action since. Even more, Mallett is attempting to replace a quarterback who finished seventh in the league in passing yards (4,317) in 2016.
Mallett will have the benefit of a receiving corps that includes Mike Wallace, Breshad Perriman and new, reliable addition Jeremy Maclin. Conversely, Flacco won't get the much-needed camp reps to get the timing down with Maclin, which will have to be figured out during the regular season, unless he returns before the six weeks are through.
Behind the former Arkansas Razorback is West Texas A&M product Dustin Vaughan, a 26-year-old who has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and on the practice squads of the Buffalo Bills and division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers. With Flacco relegated to holding a clipboard and spending plenty of time in treatment, Baltimore might also explore bringing in another camp arm rather quickly, as camp begins Thursday.

Redskins place Jordan Reed on PUP list.

DFtiyJ1VoAAc5Yi.jpg

The Redskins aren't taking any chances with Jordan Reed's health.
The team announced Wednesday that it placed the tight end on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that it's a minor toe injury, per sources informed.
It's the latest bump in the road for Reed, who missed four games in 2016 due to a concussion and a shoulder injury. He has missed a total of 18 games in his four seasons in the NFL.
Toe injuries might sound minor, but surprisingly, they aren't a laughing matter. A game that requires explosive movement from all of its 11 players on each side of the ball also requires those participants to use their big toe as part of such propulsion. Reed, one of the league's most athletic tight ends, relies on such explosion to separate himself from the rest at his position as a playmaker.
Without a walking mismatch in Reed, Washington's offense is missing one of its most versatile targets. This also speaks to how Washington is approaching the 2017 season, in which expectations fall somewhere within the postseason and Reed is more important than ever. The Redskins are being as cautious as possible to avoid any long-term issues with their most valuable players.

John Urschel tells Ravens he's retiring from NFL.

DFwEmAXUQAAGi7b.jpg

Ravens offensive lineman John Urschel, perhaps known better for his pursuit of a Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology than for his three seasons in the NFL, is officially hanging up the helmet. The team released a statement Thursday morning saying that the 26-year-old fifth-round pick let all of his coaches know.
"This morning John Urschel informed me of his decision to retire from football," coach John Harbaugh said, via the team's official site. "We respect John and respect his decision. We appreciate his efforts over the past three years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
The move had to be a difficult one for Urschel, who wrote in The Player's Tribune last year about his lifelong tug of war between football and mathematics. The burden of doctorate-level classes at one of the nation's most prestigious universities had to be intense, never mind the fact that he was competing for a starting job in 2017.
Over three years, Urschel started 13 games across four different positions.
While Baltimore still has Ryan Jensen and Matt Skura to choose from at center, the bigger loss is for the NFL as a whole. Urschel was a great ambassador for the game and redefined the meaning of student-athlete. Those interested in following Urschel's post-football career can now turn to his official MIT landing page.
