NFL to penalize use of racial slur

The head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the NFL, expects the league to institute a rule where players would be penalized 15 yards for using the N-word on the field.

John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, anticipates that the NFL's competition committee will enact the rule at the owners' meeting next month.

Wooten, who previously has urged all players to stop using the N-word, thinks the NFL will rule an automatic 15-yard penalty for first-time offenders and an ejection for second infractions.

"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do," Wooten said, according to CBSSports.com. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room.

"Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

Wooten thinks the competition committee will officially agree to the rule next month before presenting it to the owners.

"I think they're going to do what needs to be done here," he said. "There is too much disrespect in the game."

That would be a horrible rule. I hate racism probably more than most....but this is opening up a stupid huge can of worms. What if the refs heard wrong, what if teammates say it to each other to pump each other up....and worst of all.......they will say it more when no one is around....and that will be followed by football players crying to refs about what was said and I see this happening a LOT

Wow, this would give the ref's much more power. Close game a player says or doesn't says "hey nigga blah blah" if they want they can call a 15 yard penalty!!?? If a ref wanted to fix a game he sure could with this tool.

It will be one of those rules they don't enforce that often, but when they do throw the flag it will prob be at a crucial time and there will be no proof of it other than what the ref claims to have heard on the field......stupid ass rule. Guess they need a rule where you can't say "cracker or white boy etc" as well. Some people are such pussies these days

I'm Irish (mostly). Can we have a penalty if someone calls somebody a Mick or drunk on the field? What happens if the refs think they hear something from the bottom of a pile when there is a fumble?
