While the NBA, NHL and MLB float disjoined schemes for starting/re-starting, the NFL shows how they have become the #1 sport in the US.
They built their schedule with the flexibility to extend the season, if need be, while limiting the impact on players, games and fans. First, in week two all of the match-ups feature teams with the same bye week later in the season. That means, that entire week can be made up with no lost games.
They also hold the wild card of the week before the Super Bowl. If they have to cancel Week One, they can simply add that week to the end of the season and push each playoff week back one week. Those playoff games are not impacted by stadium booking so there won't be an issue.
The net result is the league bought two additional weeks without any impact on their schedule or lost games and, in this scenario, the Super Bowl is not affected. There's no need to even talk about pre-season games as no one cares and the college model already has them playing real games in week one.
