NFL forbids Vegas casinos from charging to watch Super Bowl

The Palms Hotel has just refunded money for its Super Bowl party because it received a letter from the NFL saying it could not charge money to watch an NFL game.

The NFL said it was sending that letter to ALL Nevada casinos that were charging an admission fee to a Super Bowl party.

WTF are the casinos charging admission for anyway? Not likely any will drop hold % except MAYBE in their sportsbooks and then only if the games falls.

The funny thing is, the NFL drew more attention to the gambling aspect of their sport by doing this!

WIL- Your right, Vegas should not charge for it anyway. Just charge an extra 50 cents per beer and you more than make up for it. No-brainer!

Fish, I wonder if the casinos can even charge for food and beverage if they are showing the game on the big screens.

The Palms refunded everybody's money (over 600 people) and are inviting those people to a FREE party.

I don't think they can charge for anything!!!

the people dont pay just to watch the game,they get food,drinks and other things depending on the casino.The NFL better wake up because without gambling who would really care about the NFL not to many people in my opionon.Books in vegas pay the NFL around 40,000 a year for the NFL package

What about the 100,000 or so bars around the country having Super Bowl parties, smaller, but parties nonetheless. Most of them have "buy a square" cards to boot. More hypocrisy imo.

Charlie- You're partially correct. The hotels can show the game but the screen can't be bigger than 55 inches. No, I'm not joking. That's ridiculous but that is the NFL rule or they can charge an establishment with copyright infringement or whatever legal term they want to come up with. The Palms had planned to show the game in the movie theaters. They probably would have had to use more than one theater because they had sold 600 tickets.

The hotels can still show the game, charge admission to a party and charge for food and beverages as long as the TV's they're using don't have larger than a 55 inch screen.

SB - In a way that makes a little more sense. Selling tickets to showing at a theatre or movie house scenario could be a bad precedent for the NFL.

Wil, I remember when I was a kid growing up in Detroit, the NFL used to allow movie theatres in the area to show Lions games on closed circuit for $20 when it was blacked out.

Of course, that's when we had to fiddle with the rabbit ear antenna and put aluminum foil around them to avoid having snow on the picture.

I have looked around for an article about this but haven't seen it. It sounds very plausible though. Amazing.

I don't think it is all that simple though Dante. A lot of these parties have some high price tags like $50 to $100 and some are private for their high rollers and stuff. Could be very messy for the casinos to sort it all out with such short notice.

David, there aren't any articles on this yet because channel 3 (NBC affiliate) ran the story on its 6PM newscast. The RJ will probably run the story in Thursday's issue.
