It is fair to say at the quarter mark of the NFL season that there have been a few surprises so far this year. After all, few would have projected that the Buffalo Bills would be tied at the top of the AFC standings while the winless Indianapolis Colts are a complete mess at the bottom of the board, and there are a ton of oddities that have happened in between. Week five of the NFL season is when the true contenders begin to separate themselves from the pretenders, and with so many games left to play, the truth is that everything is still up in the air.

The Colts have put themselves in position to win each of their past three games only to concede losses in the fourth quarter, and while an 0-4 record is not pretty, there are a ton of positives that this team can take from their performance so far this year. Indianapolis has rallied behind a strong pass rush and done a good job defending the run, but the problem is that they have spent way too much time on the field without the protection of an offense that can maintain ball possession. Backup Curtis Painter has taken a ton of flack, but he has done a lot of good things as well and could finally be ready to lead the Colts to a win. Kansas City has been hit by the injury bug, and after earning their first win last Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, they could be due for a letdown heading in to theirhttp://www.payperhead.com/ bye week.

Prior to the season, there may not have been a single NFL cost per head expert that projected it would be the 3-1 Bills hosting the 1-3 Eagles, but that is the case heading in to a matchup that will truly prove which of these teams is for real so far. Philadelphia is not a sub-.500 team, but they have struggled to defend the run and get their offense going with any real consistency so far. Buffalo lost to the Cincinnati Bengals on the road last week after consecutive comeback wins, and could be due for another letdown against a talented Eagles’ team that simply has to have this game.

Oakland Raiders @ Houston Texans (-6)

The Raiders and Texans were both expected to contend for their respective division titles, and both have started strong. While Houston has the aerial attack to air it out and compete with the best in the AFC, Oakland has operated a throwback offense that relies heavily on the running game, and will look to pound the rock against the Texans’ defense. Houston has improved its defense in each of the past couple of seasons, and it is finally at a level where they can compete as a legitimate contender in the AFC.
