Matt--if you consider all the 2yold that were in the JV Breeder's Cup last fall--and now are on the shelf-or done (Toccet/Sky Mesa/Whywhywhy/Bull Market/Kafwain/holdthattiger/Zavata) it's pretty logical to me that next year's Derby winner has never even set foot on a track as of June.

No BC Juvenile winner has ever won the Derby. Seems that the capable hands of derby winning trainers take their sweet time--either that or they have a sugar daddy like Lewis or Gann who sees a lively 2yo and buys him off another owner. That's why-when you see a big time horse-esp a 2 or 3 yo-in the form--and it says "previously trained by" and there is no evidence of a claim--it was a private purchase. Gann made an offer on a friend of mine's horse last summer at Saratoga (he wasn't the only one). Those rich guys who want a derby winner are relentless.

Watch out for CHapel Royal. He's 2 for 2 in maiden and an allowance. He won both handily. He was also bought for 1.2 million.

THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL A SON OF MONTBROOK, WHO HAS RUN TWICE BY JUNE OF HIS 2 YO YEAR WILL WIN THE KENTUCKY DERBY. THESE TYPE OF HORSES (BIG SALE PRICE B/C THEY HAVE GOOD WIN EARLY CONFORMATION, RAN FAST TIMES IN A TRIAL RACE OR DURING A WORKOUT, WITH A PRECOCIOUS, SPRINTER'S PEDIGREE)WILL WIN A BUNCH OF SPRINTS AND MAYBE EVEN A 1 1/6 RACE AND THEY ARE COOKED BY THE TIME THE DERBY CHASE HEATS UP. KAFWAIN IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS.

Roanoke-you seem correct--AWD of montbrook progeny is a short 6.6 furlongs.........also (and I don't have them in front of me) but I doubt that any serious derby contender had ANY track experience prior to time of Saratoga/DelMar meets -at the earliest. Lot of these guys get 1-2-maybe 3 times over the track by Nov/dec previous year-then show up at GP maybe a month into the meet.

Follow the A.P. Indy offspring. It is only a matter of time before he sires a derby winner.

Atswhatimtalknbout probably ran the best in the derby but traffic trouble cost him.
