Bos was like -215, it's not a total, Minn was 5.5-6.5 fav

Multiply both numbers by 20 and you will have your money lines! And it wasn't long ago everybody used 'New York' lines! For example Boston +180 TB -220!:sad3: Or vice-versa , because Tampa was the dog, but I think you understand what I mean! BTW- pick 'em meant -110 either way!

How about football odds before there were point spreads. I'm not that old but have read about it. Must have been a bitch.

Thanks, I always wondered about that, I'd never use those stale odds.

How many people didn't know how to read these ?

Doug, some people also called them 'nickel' lines beacuse they were based on 5's. Like your example, Tampa was getting 9 to 5 and Boston you were laying 11 to 5! A simpler time , my friend!

They just put the spread, no ML, assume -110. I understood those fine.

East Coast thing

most locals I have dealt with take bets on how many "times" you want it

that kind of line from the paper makes it real easy

"100 times on Boston" = $500 bet

now when you look at the line it is easy to figure out you are laying $1100 to win $500 (just multiply the # in the paper by the number of times)

easier than quoting "-220" and then doing the math

Likewise,

If using offshore lines of +180 and a player calls and wants to bet $350 on that game, no way your average bookie figures that out without a calculator handy

but using the line above, the player would say "70 times on Tampa" and all the book has to do is simple math (70 X 9 = 630)

2 seconds later he can see it is $350 to win $630
