If there was a movie called "Public Perception vs. Reality", Ryan Fitzpatrick and Kirk Cousins would be the main actors. These guys have been two of the worst QBs last season. Ryan Fitzpatrick had 31 TDs and 15 INTs on an easy schedule. It was easy betting on the Jets last year because they had favorable matchups in many many games. But at the end, Ryan Fitzpatrick was the guy who prevented the Jets from going to the playoffs.
Ryan Fitzpatrick neither has the arm strength nor the accuracy to run an offense efficiently. So many times he was over- or underthrowing receivers it wasn't even funny. He threw so many interceptable passes. He can thank god that he was put into a system with maybe the best 1-2 WR punch in the league and an OC who simplified the system by chiming in a lot of simple YAC throws. All those components overshadowed his poor QB play. Brandon Marshall made so many catches by adjusting his route and body to catch a poorly thrown ball.
Geno Smith will run this offense much better than Ryan Fitzpatrick and this isn't a joke. Geno was the #1 QB at the start of last year's training camp and he presented himself much improved in his favorable system. I am so high on Mike Maccagnan, he made a lot of smart decisions. But I would lose some respect if they really re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick and make him the starting QB once again. On this schedule in 2016, Fitzpatrick would be a ticking bomb and he would be replaced by week 5.
Geno is way more athletic and has a better touch on deep balls. He is more precise than Ryan Fitzpatrick ever will be. He had two terrible seasons, without a doubt. But how much is to blame on Geno if your coach is allergic to passing offenses and your receivers are Greg Salas, Jeremy Kerley and David Nelson?
Bottom line: Geno Smith isn't going to be an elite QB but he is going to surprise a lot of "experts" by definitely playing better than Ryan Fitzpatrick.
