I wish I was making this up, but here are some new laws that will go into effect in 9 months...

Causing a fatal accident....6 months to 8 years in jail...

Causing a fatal accident while drunk....3-15 years in jail

Racing against other drivers...1-3 years in jail

Driving drunk (BAC 0.75)...1-3 years in jail

Driving tipsy (BAC 0.5) 410 dollar fine...(you have to be shitting me)

Operating a pirate taxi....410 dollar fine

Driving 20 km above the speed limit...310 dollar fine (fuking amazing)

Not wearing a seatbelt...310 dollar fine

Holding a cell phone...310 dollar fine (not using, HOLDING)

Ignoring traffic lights or signs...310 dollar fine

For taxi drivers and bus drivers who insult their passengers...82 dollar fine

For drivers who do not have booster seats for their children up to 12 years old...410 fine

For farmers who pile their help in pick-up trucks...165 dollar fine

You can be fined for reckless driving dodging potholes (I am not making this up)

All I can say is that Transito officers will get richer...how are the Ticos who get fined afford to pay these ridiculous fines? Only one that really makes sense is the penalty for killing somebody who drives drunk...NEVER,EVER heard of any law that driving tipsy is an offense....Tansito cops are licking their chops and GUARANTEED to get rich..:think2::shocked:

these laws are some of several to drive the gringos home or permit these transitos the opportunity to shake down the gringo drivers...how many times is a taxi in back of you and blowing their fuking horn to move, even when you have a red light or in a school zone behind a bus...

this Tico administration is almost as bad as the US....

I can surely see some selective enforcement in the future. Target the Gringos because they can pay the fines or bribes to stay outta jail. Wink and nod to your fellow countrymen.

Settle down old man. There will never ever be another administration like Dubya's.

If you don't wanna pay the fines, don't break the law. Simple as that. Its not like they're taxes where everyone has to pay. And yes, some of them are ridiculous, but hopefully it will cut down on drunk driving and the thousands of car related deaths each year. Plus we all know that law enforcement here is minimal. I expect a few modifications to the law in the near future, when they realize how unrealistic/stupid some of them are.

Yes, this law is not the best, but I'll take it over the one we have right now, and hopefully they'll improve it. The fines and punishment right now are too weak.

Hahahaha. I always pictured you as a wealthy gringo who had a driver, like steak tartar. I'm a bit dissapointed I must say. I was wondering why you were so concerned.

they can do this shit.....when the crook that robs me goes to JAIL instead of a 1 hour/less trip to the police and then released

there is NOT EVEN A TRACE OF 'punishment must fit the crime'

and there is no need to 'wait' for modifications to this law, the geniouses that passed it have already said (in what, less than a week?) that they are going to modify it

idiots

Anything the tico gov does, does not make any sense.

But I guess you have to have extreme measures for extremely retarded/inconsiderate drivers.

Especially with all the Canadians and Americans around here who think 10,000 colones bill buys them the right to drive drunk.
