I posted this a little while ago on the "Newbies Board" but there doesn't seem to be much traffic over there, so I thought I would try over here.

I just started placing wagers about a month ago. I have followed sports very closely all my life and consider myself very knowledgable. I am obviously starting out with a small balance, and was just curious as to what the best strategy is, to build up my earnings?

Over the last month, I have placed all kinds of bets, teasers, parlays, straight bets, etc. Although I have had some success with parlays, (have hit on 10 team moneylines, 4-6 teams point spreads,) I have come to the conclusion that parlays are not the way to go, at least anything more than 2 teams. I hit on a 4 teamer last Saturday night, and won $100 on a $7.50 bet, but since have lost the amount b/c I bet some larger amounts on parlays.

Anyhow, I plan on depositing $100 today into my account, and plan on placing strictly straight bets for now on. What is a good amount/% to place on each game?

Thanks a lot in advance for your input, and great site!

Welcome, Greg.

Straight bets are the way to go. But those others can be tempting, I know. I have heard you should not risk more than 5% on any game.

Post some picks if you get a chance.

Don't risk more than 10%.

If you bet 3 games today at $10 and they all win, your new balance will be $130.

Then bet no more than $13 on each your next bets.

That's the only way to win over a season. It's called money management.:toast:

On the other hand----
If your looking to get rich, then bet 2 -$50 bets and hope they win or split.
If you lose both, Just quit, because you will never win betting that way.

Thanks for the reply Presto, I appreciate it. I have also heard the rule of thumb concerning the 5% wager on any one game. I will post some picks in just a bit. Of course, I wouldn't reccommend putting too much stock in them as I don't have a track record of success....just yet :)

Edit*** Thanks Woody for your response as well.....I appreciate it. I have only been reading this forum for about a week or so, but I have already noticed that you are pretty successful and regarded as one of the better cappers on here!

My #1 rule in gambling is

Any team can win on any given day, whether they stink or not.
So don't risk more than you can afford to lose!!

Remember this and you'll be around for many years!!:103631605

greg - my advice is risk no more than 3% of your bankroll per wager. anything more than and your reaching.

lets face it, if you bet 10% of your bankroll the first wager and lose, in order to bet 10% again your wager is more than the first one.

bet 3% each time, and if you have a play ur completely in love with bump it to 5%

Some days, I really like to play the smaller schools like an Appalachian State, a Citadel, Wofford, College Of Charleston, etc. I just seem to have better luck with them than a Georgetown, a UCLA, or a North Carolina. These bigger schools get all the attention, but the action is just the same with the smaller schools. With a little research, you can get pretty good leans on the smaller schools and it might be something the odds makers have overlooked because the emphasis is always on the Dukes, Kansas's, and Louisville's of the world.

That's a great point John......I have found that I have had a lot success with those schools....Troy, Niagra, Arkansas LR,etc.

I hit on a 4 team ATS parlay last Sat night which was Weber St -1.5, Niagra -4.5, Tx A&M (Big XII school of course) +5.5, and Arkansas Little Rock -4.5

Not really -----

If he has $100 and bets $10 and loses, he has $90. So the most he should risk on the next bet would be $9.

The only way he loses is if he loses every bet he places within that $100.

So your never reaching:grandmais

But I stated to never bet more than 10%, not to bet every game at 10%.
He could like 5 games, and 2 which he really likes and the others not so much.

He could bet $10-$10-$5-$5-$5........Lose all 5 and he still has $70
He could bet $5-$5-$2-$2-$2........Lose all and still be up $84

I have always made more money, just betting the top 25 teams and better teams in smaller conferences.
That's where blow-outs are more to happen

I never bet on Rubbish teams, because they can just quit on you or not be any good in the first place.
Guys that keep thinking teams have to win, usually go broke.

Parlays and Teasers are considered by many (myself included) to be "sucker bets". There have been some good strategies in this thread, but mostly important Straight Bets are the way to go to win $ in long run...
